Every program needs an identity, and Indiana football has become the internet's team.

I.

A rock into the ocean. Tree falling in the forest.

Stupid things can be inspirational. This week is testament to that fact.

When you're running a blog like ours, you've generally got an idea of what might play with your audience. What ideas will take off. What ones will go silently into the night with a comment or two from loyal readers. But it's all a crapshoot. You never really know what's going to launch -- and what won't. It's 100% driven by you all, our readers.

The next time someone wants to take "credit" for starting this idea or movement, please laugh at them gratuitously. Credit is not a concept that exists, or is worthwhile discussing, on the internet. It's ignorant of the fact that one person cannot create something that goes "viral" with the touch of Jafar. Things, ideas, campaigns grow online due to a confluence of factors -- not any one single influence. It's also ignorant of one other thing: literally no one cares.

We did not do this. He did not do this. You did this. You did this, fam.

Thank you, for almost making this a reality.

II.

This week has been cathartic.

There are many times you wonder why you do this, why you spend so much time with eyes glued to Twitter. Why you spend so many hours of downtime workshopping post ideas, why you can't watch a game without feeling the need to jump up in front of the television and Vine every little stupid noteworthy play that happens. Your real-life friends and family will often think you are weird. (They aren't wrong!) Seriously, try and explain Crimson Quarry to someone that isn't familiar with what exactly we do. Good luck. So, it's like Inside The Hall, or Peegs, or something, right? Or like the Onion, but for sports. It's wasted breath. Better yet: explain on a date or to a girl's parents that you are a sports blogger. No matter how friendly the response you will be convinced that they think you are a weirdo. So if you're a work colleague, or friend, or fellow law student, this is why I oft react as if you are scratching a chalk board when you say, "Hey, I read your article."

Until this week.

Against sometimes my better judgment, I sign my name to everything I write. I'm convinced it's going to stand in the way of me getting a job one day, somehow -- if it hasn't already. But you guys made enough noise and attracted enough attention to this place that we brought in a whole new group of eyeballs that weren't previously here. A new group of people that can hopefully find out that sports should be fun and don't need so much dang sanctimony and doom-and-gloom all the time.

For me, it means that when the time comes to get a real legal job a year from now, I might just be able to explain this whole thing I do a little easier. Or maybe someone stumbles across this site and finds my self-edited and often typo-filled writing to be compelling -- and thinks I could do it full-time. I don't know.

All I know is this very stupid thing has somehow positively affected my real life.

Thank you for somehow, unintentionally, doing that.

III.

I've oft written about how a program built from scratch needs a boost, a break, some outside factor to get there. For Indiana football, maybe this is it. Maybe Indiana can be the internet's team.

I sat and watched for three quarters Saturday a program that looked like it has turned the corner. Wake Forest is far from a world-beater, and the performance was far from flawless. But as I've said previously, they did the things good teams do well. Win in the trenches. Control the ball. Sure, there's some work to be done when it comes to finishing games -- but that's all part of the process of becoming good. The game wasn't as close as the final score -- and Indiana easily handled another power conference opponent on the road. That, in and of itself, is something to be happy about.

But creating a true football program -- while on-field results are a huge part of it -- requires fan support. More than anything, this week should show the Indiana administration that somewhere below the surface, there is a massive reserve of passionate Indiana football fans waiting to come out of the layers of the earth. Think about this: the producer of the nation's most watch college football show called Indiana fans relentless. The movement made it to Finebaum. Some of you were even stupidly. tweeting very mean things at Lee Fitting. These are terms and things normally reserved for Alabama and Florida State fans.

The #iufb4gameday movement was cool, and it's only suspended, not dead. But it should be the start of something -- not the end. It's a massive start of a week leading up to what is still the biggest game in the modern history of Indiana football. It should be the start of a special season that ends in a bowl game -- maybe even one that approaches the New Year's holiday, who knows. And if this program takes off and begins to do that year in and year out, we might look back on this whole thing as the time fans really got behind Indiana football.

Thank you, for making all this happen.

Thank you, for making me believe in what we do here at CQ.

Thank you, for making me believe in Indiana football.

5-0. Why not?

Today's objective: PAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWL.

Y'all.

You guys are amazing.

We can't say how overwhelmed the effort to get this very crazy thing done has been -- but we'll save that discussion for when it does or does not happen. Right now, we're very close and there is a very real chance College Gameday will come to Bloomington next Saturday. Sure, we're a loss or two away, maybe.

Or maybe not. Not if y'all are so damn loud that Lee Fitting & Co. just can't go anywhere else.

Games are tomorrow. The decision will be made early Sunday. This is the last day to make raucous noise about the #iufb4gameday movement with no competition. Here's what we need y'all to do today.

Step 1: NEW AVATAR BABY YEAH

What's a viral social campaign without the option to change your profile picture or twitter avatar to something that supports that movement? Here, we made you one in five seconds:

It's offset AND minimalist. This campaign is SO HIPSTER.

Step #2: Clog the dang telephone lines of every national ESPN Radio show

There's a ton of world out there besides Twitter, y'all -- and we gotta get to it. So let's call PAWWWWWWWWWWWWWL himself and make him talk about how good of an idea this is.

The telephone number is 1-888-SAY-ESPN. That's 1-888-729-3776. Letters in telephone numbers are dumb. Here are the shows you're targeting.

12-1 PM: LEBATARD AND STUGOTZ. LeBatard loves fun and stupid things like this! He gave his Baseball HOF vote to Deadspin! Stugotz won't like it because Stugotz or something.

1PM-4PM: RUSSILO AND KANELL. Yeah, call them too. Make Kanell admit defeat to the #B1G.

3PM-7PM: PAWWWWWWWWWWL: This is it though, y'all. Everyone. We need every single one of you here. Call him. Make him talk about it. Make him endorse it. Do not rest until every single line is consumed by the #IUFB4Gameday movement.

9PM-11PM: BOMANI. This movement needs Bo, too. Call Bo slightly buzzed on the way to the bar. Bo is cool and fun and probably doesn't like Clemson -- h e'll like this idea.

Get on your local radio grind, too. Dakich has been on it in Indy, but hit up Query & Schultz over at 1260. (317-239-1260). If you're not from Indy, do it up in Chicago or wherever. Waddle & Silvy. The Score. Whatever. Call them. Now.

Step #3: FANPOSTS

You know what makes our voice louder? YOUR VOICE. Up at the top of this page, you, yes YOU, can go write a FANPOST on why you want College Gameday to come to Bloomington. They'll all get posted -- and we'll tweet out some of the best to our followers.

Step #4: Facebook! Instagram! Snapchat! Call your grandmother

Some people (smartly) do not tweet! Make sure you're hitting that #iufb4gameday hashtag on every dang social media site on that spankin' new 6s.

Step #5: We need you crawlin' in Lee Fitting & Herbie's mentions like, once an hour

Have you tweeted about #iufb4gameday yet? Good. Now do it again. And again. And again. And again.

Let's make magic, y'all.

UPDATE: Finebaum had Lee Fitting join the show and brought up the #iufb4gameday movement. Fitting echoed the thoughts from his appearance yesterday on Dan Dakich's radio show, only with more doom and gloom for Hoosier fans.

Fitting did say that the "Hoosier faithful have been relentless on Twitter" (which we thank you for), but reiterated that the only way Bloomington hosts Gameday is if both Georgia and Notre Dame lose this week to their respective heavy underdog opponents. While the comment seemed more "tongue-in-cheek" on Dakich's radio show, this time it was far more straight forward.

He did say that if IU-Ohio State were to take place on October 10th, there's a good chance they would visit as the schedule that week is rather barren.

Fitting would go on to talk about the expected demand and excitement from Clemson fans, pretty much sealing the deal on the case.

The #iufb4gameday movement has exploded, which has resulted in Indiana making it's way onto a shortlist of candidates for next week's Gameday location, according to College Gameday producer Lee Fitting.

College Gameday producer Lee Fitting hopped onto #iufb4gameday originator and creator Dan Dakich's radio show today, where he tempered Indiana fans' expectations and hopes for Gameday to come to Bloomington.

Per Mike Miller of The H-T:

"(IU is) on that list, which is a win to begin with," Fitting said. "But what they’re up against next week is Notre Dame at Clemson, and they’re up against Alabama at Georgia. My message to the Hoosier faithful is you better be the biggest fans of UMass, who plays Notre Dame (this weekend), and Southern, who plays in Athens this week against Georgia."

The plus side to the interview is that Fitting did say that IU is on the "to be considered" list, which is an accomplishment in its own right.

"When we see a fan base do that it makes us think, ‘Gosh, if we bring the show out there, it’s going to be an unbelievable scene and we’re going to get great support on and around our set. That’s a big take on what we decide to do."

The other positive for the Hoosiers is that Fitting said he'd "love" to bring Lee Corso back to Bloomington before his time is up and that it'd be "unbelievable" for both he and the fans.

Despite that, the general sense for most who left the interview is pessimism. Fitting left the show saying Indiana would be guaranteed a spot should UMass beat Notre Dame and Southern beats Georgia, but was still a tongue-in-cheek comment.

However, Fitting has noticed the movement on Twitter, and there won't be a better story next week than a 4-0 Hoosier team taking on the defending national champions in Ohio State and the return of Corso to Bloomington.

The takeaway?

Keep tweeting Lee Fitting and Kirk Herbstreit with #iufb4gameday.

The College Gameday to Bloomington hype train is at full speed, but Coach Kevin Wilson is pumping the brakes on the idea to his team.

On Wednesday night at the weekly "Inside IU Football with Kevin Wilson" radio show, Coach Wilson addressed the College Gameday talk that has taken over the IU football fanbase.

But, per Mike Miller of The H-T, it wasn't his favorite idea:

"First of all, if you’re gonna be on GameDay, you need to fill up your stadium, which we haven’t played good enough to do," Wilson said. "Typically, they don’t put your game on at 3:30 a week ahead of time and do GameDay because those are (usually 8 p.m. games). So that’s all just a bunch of wasted conversation. It’s nice someone thinks that, but we’ve got three wins and they’re all come-from-behind in games that we were favored. I don’t think we’ve done anything extraordinary."

Rest easy, though, Hoosier fans. The reality is, this should be exactly what you'd expect Coach Wilson to say in this situation. At the end of the day, his team still has a game on Saturday that they have to win for any of the College Gameday hoopla to even be possible.

What matters is that fans keep tweeting #iufb4gameday and keep up the support.

WANNA BE REBELS THAT DIDN'T HAVE A CLUEEEEEEEE / WITH OUR ROCK N ROLL TSHIRTS / AND OUR TYPICALLY BAD ATTITUDES / HOOOOO HOOOOO / HOOOOOO HOOOO HOOOOOOOOO

So, this #iufb4gameday movement has become legit. But if we're going to have College GameDay come to Bloomington, we have to do it right. We've already discussed potential Corso headgear, but now let's delve into about another important part of the show.

The celebrity guest picker.

Luckily IU has a plethora of options for who that guest picker could be! Let's run down the possibilities.

BOB KNIGHT

There's precedent for the General to show up at GameDay, as he did in Lubbock when Texas Tech hosted in 2008. And not only did he coach at IU but he's also an OSU alum! However, I see two potential snags in this idea:

1) Since his firing, Knight has only been back to Bloomington a few times for the occasional book signing.

2) Even more recently, Knight's contract with ESPN was not renewed, so there may be some animosity between him and the network.

It's nice to dream big, but the only person who could possibly negotiate this peace agreement is Dick Vitale.

SAGE STEELE

Sage Steele is a great ambassador for her alma mater at ESPN, much like Scott Van Pelt is for Maryland and the late great Stuart Scott was for UNC. She's already hosted Hoosier Hysteria and spoken at IU commencement. She'd be a natural fit for the show.

JOHN MELLENCAMP

One common guest picker trope is to pick a local celebrity to come on the show and support the hometown team, and John Cougar lives just up the road from campus. He and Corso would do a killer duet of "Pink Houses."

TOM CREAN

The reaction on Twitter would be entertaining for guest picker Crean, but I'd say he would be a more likely candidate were IU facing Michigan. Did you know Jim Harbaugh is his brother-in-law? People forget that.

MARNI MOONEY

An actually good person really liked by everyone at Indiana! This would be a good thing!

MARK CUBAN

Another GameDay trope - get a famous alum to pump up the hometown faithful. Like Knight, Cuban has been on this show before, so he'd be no stranger to the guest chair. The only question is whether he'd rather be on the set or at Breakfast Club at KOK.

ANTWAAN RANDLE EL

GameDay also loves to bring back former athletes of the school, and Randle El is one of the most recognizable former IU football players. The only problem with this idea is that he works for BTN, and ESPN may not want to showcase someone working for a competitor.

Fun trivia fact: Randle El is the only wide receiver to ever throw a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

JIM ROSS

GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY. Sure, the WWE announcer/BBQ sauce entrepreneur may be a Sooners fan, but he knows Kevin Wilson from his days running the offense in Norman and their friendship apparently continues today.

--

As you can see, there are plenty of potential guest pickers with IU affiliations, and I'm sure ESPN can find one who will do an excellent-

(hears a soft country ballad about life on an island coming from an NFL stadium)

wait

(song gets louder)

what's that

(70,000 fans scream in unision)

That's right. There was only one choice all along.

Please welcome next week's guest picker:

LIFELONG INDIANA FOOTBALL FAN KENNY CHESNEY.

If we're doing this, we're going all in. Since we're already pining for College Gameday, let's look at where they should host the show on campus.

After yesterday's piece on bringing College Gameday to Bloomington for the Ohio State game was met with widespread encouragement (even if that means we're going to lose to Wake handily now), we're going next level.

Where is College Gameday going to host their show?

There are some obvious selections, but with the options endless and there being no precedent, LET'S PARTY..

5. Big Red Liquors?

Let's face it, it's one of the most oft-traveled places in Bloomington. Think of the convenience for those in attendance. They already need to get alcohol, so just have it in a parking lot of Big Red! Kids can get their beer, Gameday can see the finest Bloomington has to offer, Mark Cuban can buy out all the alcohol in the store for those in attendance,

4. TOM CREAN'S LAWN

not really sure why tbqh but let's roll with it

3. Dunn Meadow

Alright alright, there are serious considerations on this list, too. This is the start. There are many beautiful places on IU's campus, and Dunn Meadow could be one of the more easily accessible. Put the set on the grass with the Student Union in the background, plenty of room for the fans behind and around the set. The downside? It's downhill and a few blocks from the stadium, and god knows no one wants to walk uphill drunk.

2. Sample Gates

This is probably the most cliche answer, but it's still a great answer. There isn't a more scenic view across the campus. Again, you have plenty of room for the fans behind the set leading up to the walkway, there's room for Cuban's limo to pull up and have him jump out to join the set, and fans can spend the commercials at the Breakfast Club at Kilroys.

1. Outside of the Memorial Stadium South Endzone

The most logical, and likely the destination they would go with. Tons of room, obviously, in the parking lot. Fans can crowd around, plenty of room for the multiple trucks carrying the set, perfect views of Memorial Stadium, Assembly Hall and Cook Hall. Even better, fans can go directly from the parking lot to the tailgating fields. Convenience!
