On a day the Quarry’s had circled on the calender for a while, Indiana women’s basketball heads to Portland, Maine tonight face the Maine Black Bears in a neutral site contest.
This game is a big deal for one reason: Mackenzie Holmes.
Indiana’s All-America post grew up in the Pine Tree State and won two state titles during her time at Gorham High. Holmes, a four-time All-SMAA first teamer and the 2019 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year, has yet to play a collegiate game in her home state. Tonight will be the first for the graduate forward.
Here’s everything you need to know about the game.

#17 Indiana (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) put any rumblings of concerns to rest last weekend with a pair of big victories at the Fort Myers Tip Off.
Sophomore guard Yarden Garzon dropped 23 points and was a ridiculous 5-for-6 (83%) from deep in Friday’s 71-57 win over #19 Tennessee before fifth year guard Sara Scalia went nuclear and scored an IU career-best 28 against (RV) Princeton Saturday.
Scalia, who has been among the best players in the conference since rejoining Indiana’s starting lineup to start the year, was named Big Ten Player of the Week for a second-straight week Monday.
The Hoosiers jumped up four spots in the AP poll for their efforts in Florida and Mackenzie Holmes became the second player in program history to score 2,000 points in Saturday’s win over the Tigers.
Maine (4-3, 0-0 America East) spent Thanksgiving in Des Moines, going 1-2 at the Vibrant Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Drake.
Reigning America East Player of the Year Adrianna Smith, who led the league in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) a season ago, sets the pace for the Black Bears. Smith, a junior forward, was also named AE Player of the Week Monday after logging double doubles against Drake and Louisiana Tech in Iowa.
Graduate guard Anne Simon is another name to know. The Luxembourg National Team product was AE Player/Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and averages 15.9 ppg so far this season.
Indiana is the first P6 opponent Maine will face since falling to Kansas last November. The Black Bears have won each of their last five games played in Portland.
