Even after new head coach Mike Woodson overhauled the Indiana basketball coaching staff earlier this month, former Archie Miller-era assistant Mike Roberts still had a role to play.
Roberts did not get to keep his old job as one of IU’s three assistant coaches, but he was offered a position as the Hoosiers’ assistant athletic director for basketball administration. On Monday, however, a new job offer came Roberts’ way — one that would put him back on the bench as a countable coach.
According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, Roberts is headed to Cincinnati to become an assistant for newly-hired head coach Wes Miller. Roberts spent eight years as an associate head coach under Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro, where the Spartans won 20 games in each of the last three seasons that Miller and Roberts were coaching the team.
Roberts was set to be one of five staff holdovers from the previous IU coaching regime, joining assistant Kenya Hunter, director of operations Benny Sander, team and recruitment coordinator Brian Walsh and strength and conditioning coach Clif Marshall.
In other IU basketball news Monday, the program officially announced the incoming transfer of former Northwestern forward Miller Kopp. The 6-foot-7 Houston native averaged 9.6 points and 2.9 boards per game while shooting 36% from beyond the arc across his three seasons in Evanston.
He’ll have two years of eligibility at IU.
“Miller is a veteran player with three seasons of experience as a starter in the Big Ten,” Woodson said. “He is a tremendous shooter from long range who will really help us become more versatile with his ability to stretch the floor. He also is an outstanding free throw shooter who will come in and have an immediate impact.”
