In December, Tom Allen went down south to sign a four-star receiver.
On Tuesday, the Indiana coach did it again.
Malachi Bennett, rated by 247 Sports as the No. 47 receiver in the 2021 recruiting cycle, announced his commitment to IU on Tuesday, giving the Hoosiers another offensive playmaker to add to their program this fall. Bennett can officially sign with Indiana on Wednesday morning.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Alabama native had offers from schools such as Georgia, Tennessee, Louisville, Memphis, Ole Miss and South Carolina, among others. He originally pledged to UAB before decommitting in November.
At IU, Bennett will join fellow four-star freshman Jaquez Smith, a Georgia native who signed with IU in December. Altogether, Allen is bringing in four new receivers this offseason — Bennett, Smith, three-star signee Jordyn Williams and Florida State transfer D.J. Matthews. Only one regular from last year’s receiver room, Whop Philyor, has moved on from the program.
Bennett was a versatile athlete at Fairfield High School, appearing at quarterback, running back and defensive back in addition to fulfilling duties as a pass catcher. His uncle is former Bears receiver Earl Bennett.
