Hello. Welcome. It’s Monday morning, the start of a new week.
Here’s what you may have missed from the weekend that was:
Wrestling surges past Maryland
Sunday was Senior Day at Wilkinson Hall where Kyle Luigs marked the occasion with a pin at 133 to help the Hoosiers to a 27-13 victory over Maryland. Luigs and Jacob Moran (125) recorded back-to-back pins to push IU to an early 12-0 advantage, setting the tone for Indiana’s highest-scoring outing since the program beat the Terps 36-3 in the first match at the new gym on Jan. 13, 2019.
Donnell Washington posted IU’s third pin of the day and his second of the season 16 seconds into his match at 174 to improve to 5-2 on the year.
The Hoosiers are now 2-5 this season.
Hoosier volleyball can’t handle top-ranked Wisconsin
The No. 1 Badgers came to Bloomington and barrelled through back-to-back matches, knocking off IU 3-0 on both Friday and Saturday.
Saturday’s match was at least competitive during the first and third sets, which IU dropped 23-25 and 24-26. Freshman Leyla Blackwell had a hitting percentage of 1.000 with five kills across the first two sets. Overall, Blackwell finished with a .643 hit percentage, while classmate Savannah Kjolhede and sophomore Ashley Zulaf each hit over .500. For the Badgers, IU’s .250 hitting percentage was an opponent season high.
“As it goes, we’ve got to keep getting better,” IU coach Steve Aird said. “I’m disappointed we didn’t pick off games one and three. You win those and you’re up 2-1 and it’s a whole different match, a whole different feeling. At some point, we’ve got to grow up and find an ability to win those games.”
Defensively, Haley Armstrong had a solid outing on Friday, finishing with 10 digs. It was the sixth consecutive match with double-digit digs for the sophomore. That was the extent of the Hoosier highlights from Friday, as Wisconsin hit better than .400 over the final two sets to complete the sweep.
Patterson opts out
IU women’s basketball coach Teri Moren announced this weekend that Danielle Patterson has opted out of the remainder of the season. Patterson, a junior, had been averaging 7.5 minutes off the bench.
She’s the second member of IU’s program to opt out in recent days, following Jaelynn Penn’s decision last weekend.
“She and her family have decided it’s best for her to step back,” Moren said. “So she’s opted out.”
