TCQ Traffic Report: State Road 37 is a dystopian nightmare to be avoided at all costs

PUT THESE PROJECT MANAGERS IN CHARGE OF INDIANA'S DEFENSE BECAUSE THEY SURE KNOW HOW TO STOP A DRIVE.

Basically what the S.R. 67 / 37 junction looks like three hours before kickoff.

Hey! Going to a football game this weekend? Or next weekend? Or (at this rate) in 2019?

Don't take 37.

If you're north of Bloomington, chances are you have hopped on State Road 37 at one point or another in order to reach God's Country. Last year, you discovered that the progression of I-69's (nice) Section 5 construction had disrupted this otherwise pleasant drive and turned it into a calamity of shutdown lanes and stopped traffic. They took a perfectly good state road and turned it into downtown Atlanta.

This was expected by the state of Indiana and Indiana University to severely impact travel on game days for the majority of the 2015-16 school year before the expansion would be finished and the road would be turned into SHINY NEW INTERSTATE wellllllllll about that:

haha cool.

The Indiana Finance Authority has stepped in, issuing a notice of non-performance to the developers for failing to pay contractors, some of whom have now stopped work entirely. Which makes one wonder: are they doing it for the love of the road-building or just the money?

So don't take 37. It hasn't gotten any better since last year, in fact, it's infinitely worse. Getting to Bloomington from Indianapolis at any time other than midnight (even on non-game days) is a huge hassle and when 40,000 people are trying to get there all at once it's going to look like the evacuation scene out of a movie about an impending asteroid impact.

TCQ TRAFFIC SERVICES IS HERE TO HELP*:

  • From Indy: Take 67 south to Spencer, then 46 east to Bloomington. This is what I do, it's fine. You could take 65 south to Columbus and then 46 west to Bloomington but 46 west is pretty much the balls and it's not like I-65 isn't perpetually under construction, either.
  • From the East: Get to 3 as quickly as you can, go south to Greensburg, take 46 west into Bloomington.
  • I still want to take 37 because I'm stubborn and incapable of change: that's fine. If you leave now you can probably make it for the second half of the Michigan State game.

DO NOT TAKE S.R. 37 THANKS.
