Recruiting quick hits: 5 things to know this week

Checking in on the comings and goings as the official start of the season gets underway.

Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

With practice underway, the start of the season has inched ever so closer. This also means that it's primetime for recruiting visits, as high school players have time to check out schools before the start of their seasons. Here's what you need to know for the week of 10/12-10/18:

1. Bruce Brown takes his official visit this weekend

The 4-star PG out of Vermont Academy will take his official visit to Bloomington this Friday-Sunday. The 6'3" guard has been building momentum in his recruitment, and is down to 4 schools (IU, Purdue, UMass, Miami). Expect him to make visits to each of his finalists, but his recruitment is definitely in the serious phase.

2. De'Ron Davis still going through process

4-star PF De'Ron Davis is keeping his options open. The 6'9" forward out of Overland, CO is keeping his options open, welcoming in-home visits from many interested schools, showing that he is still very much in the information-gathering phase of his recruitment.

On the court, Davis took part in the Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase last week in Colorado, winning MVP as he scored 20 points on 8-14 shooting. What's most interesting, though, is how he scored his 20.

3. 2017 prospects get familiar with Bloomington

A little late on this, but the Hoosiers hosted a number of prospects the weekend of October 3-4. 2017 prospects Mitchell Ballock, Paul Scruggs, and Zach Gunn all were in town.

For Ballock, it was his first time in Bloomington, and his visit left quite the mark, saying afterwards that "Indiana definitely moved up" on his list

Also of note, 2017 Park Tudor product Jaren Jackson Jr. took an unofficial to IU last week with his father. The 4-star SF has an Indiana offer and has been to campus numerous times over the years.

4. Rawle Alkins

Poor University of Buffalo. Hanging out at the big kids' table for 5-star recruits must be intimidating in and of itself, but when that 5-star recruit tweets out his commitment to your school, only to rescind it minutes later saying it was his friends playing a joke, well that just seems cruel.

In fairness, Alkins handled the aftermath as respectfully as he could, but man, that had to sting for the Bulls.

5. Hoosier Hysteria coming up quickly

October 24 cannot get here soon enough. Assembly Hall will be loaded with prospects, highlighted by an official visit from 2016 top-35 prospect Mario Kegler (who was on an official visit to Mississippi St this weekend). We will keep you updated with expected visitors as they are announced.
