Indiana football got some great news to start off 2015 today, as Kevin Wilson announced that for UAB running back Jordan Howard has committed to playing at IU. The running back, who will be immediately eligible to transfer to IU, will join former UAB wide receiver Marqui Hawkins in Bloomington next fall.
Jordan Howard has some big shoes to fill at running back for the Hoosiers, as Tevin Coleman declared early for the NFL Draft earlier this week, In addition, Coleman's primary backup, Bloomington native D'Angelo Roberts, is graduating, so there would have been a huge hole in the backfield that Howard can jump into immediately next season. And Howard brings some nice statistics to Bloomington with him as well. In 2014, he was 10th in FBS in rushing, accumulating 1,587 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Other than Coleman's 2,036-yard season, Kevin Wilson's offense took a step back this past season, particularly after QB Nate Sudfeld went down with a separated shoulder. With Sudfeld back for one last season, and a new backfield weapon to replace Coleman, there's plenty of reason to think the Hoosier offense can regain its mojo in what is quickly becoming a very tough B1G East next year. In addition, let's hope that Howard and Hawkins can carry on the legacy of the now-defunct UAB football program at Bloomington.
