After defeating Xavier in the Cintas Center Sunday, the IU women's basketball team improved to a school record 13-0 start, and begins conference play undefeated for just the 4th time in their history, the other three coming in the 1992-93 through 1994-95 seasons. The Hoosiers haven't always won big (witness a trio of close road wins at IPFW, Indiana State, and IUPUI, as well as the Big Ten- ACC game at Assembly Hall against Virginia), but regardless of the team facing them, the team has played well enough to come away victorious. They are the only Big Ten team to have played 6 true road games, and won every single one.
The Hoosiers welcome Iowa to Assembly Hall January 2nd to begin conference play. The Hawkeyes enter with a 12-2 record, having lost to Colorado at Colorado by 3, and at Iowa State in Ames by 13. In their most recent contest on Saturday, they defeated North Dakota 88-62. Samantha Logic led the Hawkeyes with 21 points, including 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Five other Hawkeyes scored in double figures, which means the Hoosiers will face a balanced, dangerous opponent early. The Hawkeyes are in the top 25 in both polls, with a split 21/25 rank.
With a very good team set to test the Hoosiers early, we should know rather soon if this 13-0 start is the beginning of something truly special in Bloomington, or simply a nice step forward for Curt Miller and company.
