Hoosier Headlines, 2/21: Championships and Disappointment

Well that was definitely a weekend of ups and downs for Hoosier faithful. The press getting sport of basketball did not get good press. The defense struggled and there are a lot of negatives to take from it. We're going to take a look at the headlines from across the sphere of the internets and hope to find some positive news in Women's Swimming and Diving. We'll take a look at the basketball headlines first before moving on.

Hoosiers Basketball:

The Daily Northwestern: Men's Basketball Fends Off Indiana

Quick look at Saturday's game from the bad guys. Really put's into perspective how bad we have been against NW since 2009. Really can't see the light at the end of the tunnel coming this season. Should be interesting to see how it all ends up playing out.

Crean upset with IU defense

If the rules had permitted it, Tom Crean would have had his team back in Assembly Hall a few ticks past midnight to work on defensive intensity. As John said in the recap, it was definitely lacking.

Accountability must be player-born, player-bred

Zachary Osterman at Inside the Hall has a great write up on accountability and how there appears to be very little among the current roster. Is some of that Crean's fault? Probably, but the players have to perform too

.Etherington helps IU draw other recruits

Last but not least, a little bit of positive basketball news from Friday. The hell with Tom Crean being a good recruiter. Kyle Neddenriep says a lot of it is the salesmanship of 2011 recruit Austin Etherington. He was at the game Saturday, lets hope he sold the program better than the play on the court did.

Now on to something a little more happy.....

Around B-town:

Baseball Team Wins 16 Inning Game at #18 Coastal Carolina

Behind the strength of a spectacular pitching performance by a quartet of Hoosiers, the Indiana University baseball team (1-2) gutted out a 2-1 road victory over #18 Coastal Carolina (2-1) in 16 innings. Was not the best of showings for opening weekend but topping a ranked team this early is always a good sign of improvement.

Wrestlers Fall to Purdue 21-12

IU falls to No. 23 Purdue in West Lafayette. Not a pretty finish to the end of the season for the wrestlers. Hopefully this motivates them going into the Big Ten Championships.

Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj announced as official Little 500 concert

In case you haven't heard, as we're starting to get into warmer weather the Union Board announces that Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross will be the official performers for Little Five this year. Meh on the music, but yay for the Little Five being just around the corner.

Best for Last:

IU Women Win 3rd Straight Big Ten Title
More championshipy goodness. Women's Swimming and Diving keeps us within a half point of the Crimson and Gold Cup with their domination of the Big Ten this weekend. It was a straight butt kicking for the Hoosiers and couldn't have been any more impressive.

Big Ten Three-Peat for Hoosiers

Not only is it awesome that the women are champions, but they're champions again and... again. In this link we have a nice list of how many of our swimmers and divers make first team Big Ten (or was that the previous link?). Anywho the girls are at it again and maybe we'll get to see another National Championship banner to IU's name.
