Hoosier Headlines for August 2, 2009: intrigue at quarterback?

  • Adkins back to corner, DTs shuffled (The Hoosier Scoop)
I haven't had a chance to look at the new depth chart yet, but there are some interesting notes here from Dustin Dopirak of the H-T. Of particular interest is the QB position, where true freshman Edward Wright-Baker is listed as the backup. I'm not sure what to take from this. I've long been an advocate of a dual-threat QB as a field-leveler for a program like IU, and I would love for Wright-Baker to be the future of the program. On the other hand, it doesn't make much sense to use Wright-Baker as the backup, and therefore burn a redshirt year, simply for him to play in mop-up duty of if Chappell is dinged up for a couple of plays. Can we read from this that Wright-Baker will receive meaningful playing time? Who knows? I'm not sure that the move makes sense otherwise, but I'm also not sure that I always expect Bill Lynch to make sense.
