Indiana Hoosiers 2017 NFL Draft Scouting Report

The Indiana Hoosiers are a team with some good pieces in place but the picture isn't complete. The lose of their QB is a huge one. They are now unproven at the position with two guys vying for the spot. RB is in good hands, the OL has some nice veteran players in place as does WR. The main weakness lies in the LB position. They need better athletes here in order to climb up the ranks of the B1G. They will be exciting on offense once again, somehow someway with whoevers at the helm but the defense will struggle against the better competition that they face.

#70 Jacob Bailey (rSr.) LG 6-5 300. Has appeared in 19 games with 12 starts. Does a good job of getting out to the second level and latching on to a LB. Does it fairly quickly. Plays with balance. Very aware and is adept at picking up the late blitzer. If there isn't a man in his zone he'll help double team to his left or right to delete a defender. He's not going to muscle and move defenders off of the ball. Isn't a power player. Gets knocked backwards by a player who's initial move is to bull rush. He's a decent athlete but his lack of strength in the running game is a major deterrent. UDFA.

#77 Demetric Camiel (rSr.) OT 6-7 310. Has appeared in 37 games with 18 starts (17 at RT and 1 at LT). Has the look of what you want an OT to look like. Tall with extremely long arms and a solid proportioned frame with room to grow. Versatile. Has swing T ability. Really good foot speed. Gets out to the second level really fast. Allows opponents to get under his pads too much. On his heels after contact. Has to add strength to his game. His hand punch is ineffective. He doesn't move DL off of the ball. Has the kick slide of a player less athletic than he is. It isn't fluid, its choppy and somewhat plodding. Very susceptible to the speed rush to his outside shoulder. Technique needs a lot of work. Has the physique to support an extra 20+ pounds of muscle mass. If he can add the strength and power to his game he could be a world beater. He's a developmental player at this point but well worth the time and effort to get him up to being a really good professional OT. 6th-UDFA.

#67 Dan Feeney (rSr.) RG 6-4 310. Has appeared in 37 games with 37 starts (all at RG). Has played in 2,719 snaps over his 37 games and has allowed only 2 sacks! One sack allowed in the 475 pass plays in 2015 (4th quarter against Michigan State's Joel Heath). Good natural athlete. Movement ability as an interior player are pretty fluid. Gets out to the second level and latches on. Head is always on a swivel and he generally keeps his QB clean. Not a powerful or forceful run blocker. Gets some movement but he isn't close to dominant. Gets pushed back at times. The fact that he only allowed one sack in 2015 can be masked by the fact that the offense is a quick strike attack. Played better against underclassmen (Malik McDowell) than he did against upperclassmen (Adolpus Washington who controlled him all game). It'll be a good determination of where he is against a bigger, stronger Malik McDowell this season. He's a very good G prospect but not a special one in any way. 3rd-5th round.

#93 Ralph Green III (rSr.) DT/NT 6-5 304. Has appeared in 35 games with 10 starts. Pretty quick off of the snap. Creates plays for his teammates. Very active. Has some pass rush moves. Was suspended for the first game of 2015 after being arrested for battery (slapping a woman) in April 2015. Doesn't seem to really ever use his hands and get any extension with his arms. Isn't as stout or as strong as you'd want a NT/space eater to be. Only shows glimpses of that type of player. Doesn't really ever need to be double teamed. When he tires he looks as if he's trudging thru snow. Needs to be in a heavy rotation. Will never be a pass rusher and since he isn't the man you have to give extra attention to in the running game he goes undrafted. UDFA.

#4 Ricky Jones (rSr.) WR 5-10 188. Has appeared in 29 games with 13 starts. Very athletic. Versatile. Started out as a slot receiver but moved outside so he can handle both. Has good straight line speed. Very good quickness and short area ability. Has had some drops. Had one against Michigan State to open the game that turned into an INT. Tries hard but doesn't have the size or strength to be an effective blocker. Plays better against the lesser competition. Is more of a decoy and afterthought against the better teams. Missed the 2012 season after suffering an ankle injury week one so there is some injury history. Won't be drafted but is competent enough to compete for a roster spot in camp. UDFA.

#30 Chase Dutra (rJr.) FS/SS/NCB 6-1 206. Has appeared in 21 games with 10 starts (9 at FS and 1 at SS). An intelligent football player. Vocal leader and overall leader of the secondary. Gets his mates where they should be presnap. He the defensive backfields swiss army knife. Does it all and does it all well. Good open field tackler. Takes really good angles to the football. Nice natural fluid movements. Looks smooth and seamless in and out of his breaks. Doesn't get caught up in the muck and mire when pursuing the ball. A really good run defender. Always in position himself in the pass game so he isn't challenged a great deal. Doesn't get tricked or fooled by play action and fakes. Reads QB's well as well and has great route recognition. Isn't a top flight athlete. Not a forceful tackler. Usually he's dragging down the player with the ball which results in a gain of an extra yard or two instead of them being stopped upon contact. He must get stronger. Could do a better job of protecting his legs against cut blocks. Missed five games to injury in 2015 (the first two with an infection in his knee). Durability is a concern. Has a feel for the game that's hard to match. Understands the nuance of not only his position but everyone else's. A player who does most everything correctly and he has to been keenly watched to fully appreciate him. Is ready for a next level jump mentally but needs a bit more physical maturation to be a 100%er. Could rise as high as the mid to late 2nd when its all said and done. A steal!!! Late 4th-early 6th.

#16 Rashard Fant (rJr) CB 5-10 177. Has appeared in 25 games with 13 starts. Really good athlete. Quick twitched. Plays field CB and is usually isolated on an island, far away from any other defenders. Has an excellent setup in man to man coverage. Does a great job of keeping his eyes on the WR as well as the QB in off coverage. His eyes are the reason he contests so many passes (2nd in the nation with 22 PBU'S). Size will always be a concern. Not only is he small now but he doesn't have room for much growth moving forward. With his slight frame 190lbs is a stretch. Not strong enough to disengage when being blocked in the run game. Gets sealed off easily. Does a spin/gets spun around out of his back pedal, WR goes into their route. It's an awful habit. Can't bite on simple pump fakes like he did in OT against Michigan. He's quick but lacks blazing speed for an undersized CB. If he were to become a next level player he'd be relegated to the slot. Doesn't stand a chance against NFL type strength and size. Doesn't declare.

#41 Clyde Newton (Sr.) OLB 6-1 230. Has appeared in 37 games with 17 starts. Very active. Handles his vast responsibilities at OLB/S well. Covers a great deal of ground. Does a good job of coming over and cleaning up. Not a great athlete. Lacks the athleticism and blazing speed to offset his lack of size. Plays a lot in space but doesn't have quick twitch ability. Seems a tick slow in everything he does. Lined up in outer space basically where he was always allowed to roam free. In the slot almost. Wouldn't really have a position as a next level prospect because the athleticism just isn't there. Should be productive at what he's assigned to do but he's very limited. UDFA.

#44 Marcus Oliver (rJr.) OLB 6-1 240. Has appeared in 27 games with 13 starts. A forceful player. Seeks out contact. Has a knack for causing turnovers by forcing fumbles. Delivers some hard hits. Not a great athlete. Has tight hips and lacks foot speed. Not an instinctive player. Does a lot of blitzing but never seems to use a move. He's a straight ahead type player but not much else. Stays in on 3rd downs but is more of a liability there than anything. Just doesn't have the athletic ability for a look on the next level. UDFA.

#2 T. J. Simmons (Sr.) MLB 6-0 232. Has appeared in 37 games with 36 starts. A really strong defender. Plays bigger than his size. Tough as nails. Takes on OL on almost every play and keeps coming back for more. Is at his best when attacking the LOS. Has a good eye for the open hole and stopping the RB or QB for a lose (4 tfl against Michigan State). Undersized. Not athletic. No quick twitch to him. Doesn't have it when changing directions. Back pedal is awkward and has no lateral agility. It's as if he's trying to get around himself to change direction. Very tight hips. Is only a two down player. In fact his only chance is as a 3-4 ILB who's sole responsibility is to plug up running lanes. Would stand a better chance at having a chance if he were 6-3 and 260lbs but he's nowhere near that. UDFA.

#1 Simmie Cobbs Jr. (Jr.) WR 6-4 212. Has appeared in 25 games with 15 starts. Nice athleticism. Has very good body control for a bigger WR. Can make the very difficult catch (Duke game 2nd quarter, 55 yards). Is a very competent, very strong blocker with good technique. Has really good speed. Has to attack the football better than he does. He isn't the red zone threat he should be. Simply drops too many passes. He can't let the ball hit his hands and not catch it (I counted four such drops against Duke, including a sure TD and three drops against Ohio State). Doesn't run sharp routes. He doesn't get great separation because of his inconsistent routes. Doesn't handle pressure off of the line well. A budding star but he's flawed. I doubt he stays the two years that he's eligible to use so he won't be a fully capable player entering the next level. His flaws will take time to correct and he could use the refinement but he'll declare early. Late 5th-early 7th.

#34 Devine Redding (Jr.) RB 5-10 202. Has appeared in 23 games with 4 starts. Has great stamina and endurance. Can keep it going for a long time in their nonstop offense. A work horse. Hard charging. Very patient in letting his blocks develop. A one cut and go type back. Runs with a low center of gravity which provides him with good balance. Has a good blend of power and speed. Always seems to fall forward after contact. Has good feet in the open field. Knows how to evade oncoming tacklers in the open field. Does a good job of picking up the blitz. Doesn't have bell cow back size. Not an elusive runner. All of his runs end with him taking a solid hit because he doesn't have much wiggle to his game. Doesn't possess great speed for a RB his size. Not a natural as a pass catcher out of the backfield. A really solid RB who will be appreciated way more than where his draft placement suggests. His current size will always be an issue with his running style. Has to be in a committee for this reason. He does declare and goes in the 6th-7th round range.

#8 Tegray Scales (Jr.) OLB 6-0 227. Has appeared in 23 games with 1 start. Very active. Versatility lends itself to him playing OLB as well as ILB. Does a good job of side stepping an OL to make a play. Has a frame that would support another 15-20 lbs. Undersized. Doesn't have the desired athleticism that you need from an undersized LB. His average foot speed hinders him in coverage. No burst out of his backpedal which leads to average lateral agility. He doesn't know where the football is. Takes too many missteps where he should make a play but instead it goes past him. When he can't avoid an OL he's incapable of making a play. Not a candidate to leave early especially at his size. Needs to add weight and strength and be allowed to roam free to maximize his skills.

Non draft eligible player(s) of note:

#9 Jonathan Crawford (So.) SS 6-2 190. Has appeared in 13 games with 13 starts. Very athletic. Looks like a really opportunistic ball hawk. Gained a great deal of experience which should aid in him cutting down on the rookie mistakes that he made. Should be a mainstay for at least the next two seasons.
