ESPN just kicked off a list of the top 50 College basketball coaches

They only listed numbers 25-50 so far but they included a list of coaches that missed making the list completely. Tom Crean has to be the coach at the highest profile school that did not make their list. You can argue that their criteria seems a bit odd when Richard Pitino makes the list for having a surprisingly good first year at Minn. Sure he won the NIT but it's the NIT. Crean made it to 2 Sweet 16's in a row. I prefer 2 Sweet 16's to any number of NIT titles. YET - IU one of the historically great schools in NCAA Basketball, with aspirations of winning the Big 10 title and NCAA tourney every year, does not have a coach that rates as one of the 50 best in the game? I'll throw out the years before Cody as Crean had to dig out of a historically crappy situation. Starting with Cody's freshman year we did as well or better than should have been expected, Yr 2 we had a great regular season but had a disappointing NCAA tourney and last year was very disappointing. It's time that IU exceeded expectations. Some other coaches at the end of the list seem suspect. They have Mike Brey at ND at #45, He made one Sweet 16 appearance his whole time at ND. Ed Cooley of Providence at #41? Really? Would I trade Crean for Cooley - umm, NO! Bruce Weber at #40? He had the NCAA runner up in 2005 but people forget that Crean had Marquette in the Final 4 in 2003. Tubby Smith at #39? Really? Maybe the pre-2006 version of Tubby. In teh last 2 years he was booted as Gopher coach and took Texas Tech to a 14-18 record. I was pretty critical of Crean last year but he was coaching in the toughest league in the country. I do not understand how anyone would think Tubby ranked above Crean. There really is no love for this guy. How about Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph's) at #35 - in his 19 years as Head coach he has missed the NCAA tourney 13 times. His best years were 1 Sweet 16 and 1 Elite 8. What makes him a great coach? #34 Tad Boyle (Colorado - has never won his conference and never gotten to a Sweet 16. FRAN McCAFFERY (Iowa) at #33. Coaches in the same league as Crean but hasn't had as much success in that league. Has never reached a Sweet 16. COME ON!! Crean may not be a lock for HOF but give him a break. I may be disappointed becuase he hasn't won an NCAA banner for us yet but if you swap him for Fran McCaffery I am protesting outside of Assembly Hall. They actually give Lon Kruger credit at #31 for digging Oklahoma out of a hole dug by a Jeff Capel induced scandal. Really? Did you forget what IU looked like after Sampson crapped in the bed? I have to go - I have a splitting headache.
