Gonzaga is the hot story. How exciting for the Mid Major to get the #1 ranking. Since they have very little competition in the WCC they will likely win their conference tournament. Naturally then they enter the NCAA as #1 in rankings and a #1 seed. While it is fun to see Gonzaga near the top and having a great season - I am revolting against the hype. Watching the poles and the bracket experts projecting #1 seeds I am struck by the following facts: according to the NCAA RPI ranking Gonzaga is #9, according to Sagarin they are #6, these two facts are due to the following fact the WCC is the 10th best conference, Gonzaga has only faced St Mary's and BYU in conference (not Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, MSU, OSU and Minnesota or Louisville, Georgetown, Marquette, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Uconn or even New Mexico, UNLV, Colorado St and San Diego St) while Kansas and New Mexico have 2 more losses than Gonzaga - they play in the #3 and #6 conferences respectively, while the Big East is ranked #2 I haven't seen Louisville or Georgetown mentioned in very many #1 seed conversations lately. So let's all have our happy moment for Gonzaga - then let's all acknowledge that if we have to beat a #1 seed to win the NCAA championship, we will be happy to have that team be Gonzaga. I predict they are out in the elite 8.
