Rivalry Time. Thoughts from a Purdue fan.

I thought it might be interesting to see what the other side thinks, so here goes. As a Purdue fan, I am very excited for Saturday's game. Both teams desperately need wins for their NCAA resumes. It's been a bit of a disappointing year for the Boilermakers as we have collapsed and dropped a few games when holding large leads and have been up and down all year. IU exceeded expectation early.. I have to say I actually watched the Kentucky game and was happy to see you guys get the win. I am from around Louisville, KY and personally, I can't stand UofL or UK fans. Anyways, IU is currently slumping a bit and a win on the road at Purdue would be something that could kickstart a strong finish for the Hoosiers.

The main reason this game scares me is Cody Zeller. You don't have to watch Purdue for more than 5 minutes to realize that our big men are terrible. They try hard which is appreciated but simply don't have to talent to compete in this conference. That glaring weakness has been holding this Purdue team back all year and I feel that Zeller has the ability to exploit that. Purdue will have to do what we did effectively against Meyers Leonard and shut down his ability to get the ball in the first place. Both teams have good shooters who can light it up if left open. If home field advantage is ever going to be a factor, it will be this game. Purdue fans are tired of hearing "We're back!" honestly. The Paint Crew is going to be wild (me included). We want this one a lot. While it's been fun to roll over you guys for a few years, I am excited that the rivalry is going to be competitive again(especially with the next two classes).

Anyways, there are a few of my thoughts about the game. Feel free to leave comments with your own thoughts on the game. I would be interested to hear what you guys think.

I have very little optimism about this game. It’s always a big deal, and IU has very rarely won at Mackey, and almost never when Purdue has a team that is any good. I think opposing teams have, at least part of the time, done a good job of denying Zeller the ball. I would agree that is Purdue’s best bet. I’m also hoping that the Wisconsin game will have been a learning experience for Zeller regarding staying out of foul trouble on the road.

I don’t really think it is a “desperate” game for IU. If the Hoosiers win their remaining home games, then they will go to the NCAA Tournament. That’s wasn’t my goal on January 1, but I would have taken it in a heartbeat on November 1. I think it’s a bigger deal for Purdue simply because of the two home losses in conference and because Purdue’s road schedule isn’t really conducive to stealing one back. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t give IU much of a chance.

I agree that this game means more to Purdue than IU

Part of that is just the nature of playing on the road in the Big 10.

On the other hand, if IU loses on Saturday, the game on Senior Night becomes a must win for IU. Beating Kentucky and OSU but being swept by an average Purdue team would be unacceptable.

It never fails.

Leave it to a student at an engineering school to excel at being a Tool. Your SAT scores must have been too low to be accepted at Georgia Tech. };0)

I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us. ~Walt Whitman

I still don't understand that one.

I was accepted to both Purdue and IU as were almost all of my friends. The requirements are almost identical. But for some (probably illogical) reason Purdue students think that it is harder to get into Purdue. Not true. So would it be funny for me to start saying the below joke?

What do Purdue students and IU students have in common? They were both accepted to Purdue.

Nope. Not funny the reverse way either. You need some new, funny, and accurate material. Perhaps you could post a link to the Purdue rap video. That’s always good for a laugh. Here. I’ve done the work for you.

It’s a joke that works if two rivals have widely disparate admissions standards. For instance, Michigan fans could use that effectively against Michigan State, because it’s much tougher to get into U-M. IU and Purdue, on the other hand, have pretty comparable admissions standards.

I just wonder if they actually think that it’s harder to get into Purdue or if they know that it’s not and just say it anyway. Regardless, you won’t find that kind of lazy, un-researched jokes over here.

For example, I’ve spent countless hours of research to confirm that, yes, 97% of Purdue girls are, in fact, ugly.

Of course, the best IU-Purdue joke is: “why is Mackey Arena a better place to watch a game than Assembly Hall?” “Because there aren’t any NCAA championship banners to obstruct the view.” I guess a Purdue fan could flip that around with “retroactively awarded Helms Foundation banners,” but it wouldn’t have the same bite.

Purdue

keeping the ugly girls out of IU since 1864. Boom, roasted! you train-loving idiots.

Sure, there are a few cute girls at Purdue.

But the percentage of cute ones to very very unattractive ones is quite low. Astonishingly low, actually. I’d wager that the only school in Indiana that’s worse is Notre Dame. Purdue is simply ugly in all regards.

Purdue was founded in 1869, Einstein.

by GeorgiaBoiler on Feb 4, 2012 11:40 AM EST reply actions

While the founding was in 1869

it’s probably more accurate to say that Purdue has only been keeping ugly girls out of IU since 1875, since that’s when Purdue started admitting women.

If Purdue is so great academically, and you all are so damn smart,

why don’t you know that periods go inside quotation marks?

Just because their school is the most incredible institution to ever grace the Earth

doesn’t mean that everyone who has ever graduated from it is intelligent. GeorgiaBoiler, for example, has demonstrated that he is childish, a hypocrite, and far less than a genius. We can be pretty confident that he doesn’t live in a trailer like all us IU fans do. So at least he has that going for him. Although I do believe that most of his Purdue fan buddies over at H&R are ashamed of him as most of them can at least hold a civil conversation without infantile name-calling. Well, perhaps not boilergal. She seems to be cut from the same cloth.

To quote the great 80s band Journey “Don’t Stop Believin” you just keep on believing that shit. My Purdue brethren hate you Bloomington Junior College underachievers just as much as I do.

I'm sure they do, but that's not what I was talking about.

Since most of the commenters on H and R are civil and level headed adults I can only assume that they are ashamed of you. Childish insults and ‘cause I said so’ rhetoric make you sound a lot like the uneducated hillbilly trailer trash you so adamantly accuse us of being.

Nah, I never said you guys were hillbilly trailer trash, just some of your fans who have no connection to your university. I actually have a lot of respect for IU, both athletically and academically, but I try to hide that fact. You guys had a good win the other night, we’ll try to repay it next month. Cheers!

All jokes aside,

Mackey has proven to be a very difficult place to play, especially when us Purdue fans have had a week to get ready for the game. LewJack was interviewed saying that this is the best he’s felt all year (with his back) and I’m sure it’s similar for other players. I’m cautiously optimistic for this one.

that's funny

so am I. I think either way this one goes, the losing fan base won’t be satisfied to call the other team the better program. Don’t see a blow out happening on either end.

You forgot

Valentine cares not for home court advantage. He calls ever call that doesn’t exist and ignores every call that does exist for both teams. It is his goal to ruin as many games as possible with with blind officiating.
