I keep seeing people talking about Indiana's "road woes" out in B1G Blogland
What the hell are they talking about? How does one loss (our only loss) to Michigan State at Breslin constitute “road woes?” Why does nobody remember NC State, Evansville, and the neutral site win over ND? I guess people are just not paying attention.

its a meme
people can’t pay attention to IU like we do, so when one major media outlet picks it up everyone else runs with it.

I don't know
but it is really starting to bother me. I could write it off as MSU and Ohio State being stacked in the front court but Penn State should not be doing this in the post. I know they’re a very good rebounding team and what not but we shouldn’t be getting abused in the paint like this.

Bullshit foul there, too.

offensive foul on a break against Jones
officials have been calling offensive on a lot of contact that is blocking this season. IU has probably been the biggest benefactor of this shift in officiating but it still pisses me off when it goes against us.

OT- weird that Bill O'Brien is going to coach through the playoffs with the Pats, rather than
get down to business with his new team/school. That’s got to piss off Penn State fans.

Lots to think about here.
1. We’re getting beat in the paint on offense and defense.
2. Rebounding. We seemed pretty good at forcing the first miss, but not defending the second, because we allowed a second.

Penn State is shooting 10% better than average
and killing it on the offensive boards. That is how this is only a 5 point game despite the three point clinic put on by IU.

You really can't use that stat of "1-29 in Big Ten road games"
I don’t think you can apply any stats from the previous three seasons to this team. This is clearly new waters for Crean’s teams.

Really wish that last second 3 by Hulls would've gone in.
We would’ve matched Purdue’s game total in one stinkin half.
But even more than that I wish we could get it inside more and could attack the boards better. Although it seems like PSU has gotten a LOT of lucky bounces that have aided their rebound numbers (offensive boards especially).

It's more than luck.
We just don’t seem to be going after rebounds or defending inside. I feel like I’ve made that same observation for several games now. It’s a growing concern.
Someone on the HT chat said Zeller has only taken two shots. That might have something to do with it, if that’s true.

Oh, don't get me wrong
we are neither attacking the glass nor boxing out. I’m just saying that the numbers are at least somewhat inflated by some lucky breaks for PSU. We’d be losing the board battle regardless.

Clearly the keys to winning this game are:
1. Improve our interior defense.
2. Rebound.
3. Have the broadcast crew interview Bill O’Brien again and go on a run while they aren’t paying attention.

Ok. not the best end to the game, but I'll take it.
As bad as that end was, I’m heartened by the fact that IU pretty much led all of it. They didn’t fold when Penn State came at them. That’s a good thing.
--------
"First they came for the ugly, and I did not speak out because I was not ugly.
Then they came for the nerds, and I did not speak out because D&D IS A RESPECTABLE GAME WITH A LARGE PLAYERBASE OK MOM???
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because let's be real they always come for the Jews.
Then they came for me, and I did not speak out because they actually came for me back when they came for the nerds."
--
"How can a pickup truck contain enough mass to unfold into a towering machine? I say if Ringling Brothers can get 15 clowns into a Volkswagen, anything is possible."
So... we hit 64% of our threes - 16 of 25
and only pulled away in the final 20 seconds?
Our defense must have been gashed. From the box score it appears that Watford reverted towards the mean: 2-9 from the field, but he did grab 8 boards.
The rebounding was a huge problem
and I think the defense got tentative towards the end because the refs all the sudden started calling fouls pretty tightly. Hoosiers did what they had to in order to win. Roth should get huge applause not only for hitting all those 3s but for coolly hitting those FTs at the end.
Props to Penn State as well. They played well and fought to the end. Need to start filling up that arena, though. The lack of fan support is a little embarrassing.

Good context by Ryan Corazza
Inside the Hall notes that Indiana actually held Penn State below their offensive rebounding rate average by a good 10%. That is something PSU is actually good at – so while I’m sure it was frustrating as heck to watch, we might give the Lions some credit here. (http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/01/08/the-minute-after-penn-state-3/)
And walking out with a narrow win is unequivocally good news, even as the Hoosiers had to shoot very well to do it – the Boilers had played pretty decently on the road against better teams before getting clobbered a few days ago.
Also, very glad to see Hulls bounce back and Matt Roth finally get a chance to do what he does best.
It'll be this evening before the wrap is up
all three of us are currently in different positions of indisposed.
-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.
As AJ noted, I am out of state and haven’t seen a minute of the game or the box score, but given IU’s board numbers and Penn States, I am not shocked that they outboarded us. It has been one of their few overall strengths. The most troubling thing to me is the mini trend of allowing teams that we could have finished earlier to stick around. I did catch part of the game on radio, and XM had the Penn State feed. Their guys were effusive about how different this Penn State team has been in the last two games. For what it is worth, they seem to think the team has turned a corner, which wouldn’t be terribly surprising with a young squad and new coach.
