Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers (game thread).

Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers, Jan 26, 2012 9:00 PM EST

Wisconsin_medium

When IU last won in Madison, Dick Bennett was the Wisconsin coach and Bob Knight and Myles Brand still got along with each other. Andrae Patterson and AJ Guyton were the Hoosiers' two double-figure scorers in that one. Let's hope that the Hoosiers can re-establish their previous tradition of playing well in Madison. Go IU!

At least we have TV TEd for this one. He craves the boos of the home crowd the way most refs crave the cheers.

“In a normal year…” says smug Wisconsin alum Andy Katz. Hey, Andy, in a normal century, Wisconsin has a 60 year NCAA Tournament drought and a 17 year losing streak to IU. Yes, Badgers, keep convincing yourselves that the Oughts had any relationship to “normal” in Big Ten basketball.

by indiana, our indiana on Jan 26, 2012 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

Smug bastards be smug.

However, my memory is short, having only paid attention to IU since my student days in 2003, but I’ll always think of Wisconsin as tough bastards and a big win whenever we beat them. In any case, the Oughts are far more relevant to discussions of “normal years” than the 80s, 70s or any time before.

A sassy, brassy, classy lassy.

by LoneStarHoosier on Jan 26, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

They definitely are tough. I didn’t see a Final Four during my time at IU in the mid 1990s, and saw only one Big Ten title, but we never lost to Wisconsin, home or road, during my four years (or to Northwestern, either). And Andy Katz is older than me, and never ever saw an NCAA team during his years. Neither did anyone else at Wisconsin during the 80s, 70s, 60s, or 50s. Wisconsin hoops fans remind me of NU football fans. They both agree that college athletics was invented in 1995.

My halftime thoughts:

Perimeter defense is looking a little better. OpFor not getting as many open looks at the basket. Turnovers are still irritating my a little.

Hoosiers couldn’t find a board at Home Depot. That has to change, especially on defense. Can’t give the other team a bunch of second (thirdfourth) shots.

Two free throws? FYTV.

I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us. ~Walt Whitman

defense looks smart – they seem to have their heads up, so they know when someone needs help. which is nice.

gotta keep it up on taylor though – that guy is a liability waiting to happen. so far, so good, but that guy could go crazy.

I’m pretty happy with the effort. We are shooting well, and are responding well to their perimeter D by taking it to the hole. IU has 3 offensive boards to only 6 DRs by Wisconsin. Wisconsin had 3 ORs to 11 DRs for IU. I wish we had a cushion, but if we can use Cody this half we will be in it.

I have no recollection of this team being successful with the zone. Might catch the home team by surprise for a couple possessions, but IU zones always get picked apart in the end.

but if the referees change who the foul was on twice, chances are there wasn’t much of a foul in the first place.

The inconsistency on what’s called is just amazing though. Not that I’m surprised. B1G officiating is as god-awful as it gets.

I try not be be “bitch about the refs guy,” but that’s three of four fouls on our best player that are iffy at best. There certainly was contact, but the ball was landing out of bounds.

by LoneStarHoosier on Jan 26, 2012 10:56 PM EST reply actions

I am.

Forget the bad officiating. You have to outplay that. I’m not happy that they didn’t muscle up to Wisconsin. I wish they’d use Watford’s and Jones’s athleticism to just drive that lane like monsters and draw fouls. Cody not being able to muscle that dirty player Bruscewitz or whatever it’s spelled is understandable, Cody needs to grow still. But they’re not a superior team in the lane, yet IU doesn’t challenge them where they could hurt them.

And yet, they still played their butts off and kept it close until the end. Despite not using an optimal gameplan.

That could have been a win. So much of it was taken out of IU’s hands by the refs, but they didn’t compensate by muscling up. You need to be rough in B10 play. Freakin’ drive Elston into the lane and foul him out, but let someone put the fear of Holy Hell into that Wisconsin team. That’s what annoyed me the most. Drive on those chumps. Make them foul themselves out; it’s not Wisconsin’s supposed “disciplined” play that gets them no foul calls, it’s teams not forcing them to be blatant with their fouling tendencies. IU can. They’ve got the skill.

Gah… I’ll rant for an hour if I keep this up. IU can beat those chumps. They just needed a slight change to do it. Soon…

take away

we played well. kohl is tough.

did we really get fouled that little – i don’t think so.

but,

we didn’t have any breakdowns. sure, there are things to improve. we could’ve pulled out a win. but, we didn’t pull the ‘come from ahead loss’ like we did @ nebraska, or the ‘only show up when it’s too late’ against minnesota.

so there’s that.

i want to see blood against iowa though. i want people to think “iowa’s no good… but that was an impressive win”

Valentine is terrible at his job. That, plus him getting fined for what seemed to be a blatant IU bias got him shipped off to the Big East, B-12 or something. How’d he get back into the B1G?
