If Kevin Wilson's communication skills are as good as his coaching

He’ll make Gerry DiNardo look like Vince Lombardi.

The Grantland piece is about the most attention I can ever recall for IU football from a national outlet (for those who don’t know, Grantland is Bill Simmons’s ESPN affiliated spinoff site).

There were parts of that piece that made me think I was slipping into a parody piece by Spencer Hall

or the guys at KSK. Really. We have a coach who talks really fast, is ostensibly serious and prone to angry outbursts, and intersperses within his instructions jokes, at which the players are hesitant to laugh. Kind of sounds like the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket if he lowered his voice a little bit and was acting really chill.

Which is to say, I kind of adore Coach Wilson. I can’t wait to see how the team plays.

I agree. Also, I think there is a better-than-zero chance that @fakecoachwilson is KW’s real twitter feed.

Slightly off-topic

But with the first two items noted above, we have nailed down both ends of the spectrum of good/bad sports journalism.

I agree.

I should tell Devin that he need not kid when insulting Bob Kravitz, considering that I am the author of a post-entitled Bob Kravitz: intellectually dishonest or as dumb as he looks? and its highly anticipated sequel, Bob Kravitz: indeed, as dumb as he looks.

I would actually say that the Weinreb article has a huge oversight. No, the infamous radio incident was not two guys who got all insensed when Wilson politely asked “what do you need,” it was two guys who got insensed when Kevin Wilson called the guys on the radio show idiots (twice) then snapped what do you need (twice) then said he doesn’t have time for them and hung up. Yet Kravitz is the bad guy for bringing up that IU has question marks at QB and in the secondary? Of course they do, if only for the fact that the team is replacing players at both of those areas along with the new coaches/new system/going into the first game of the year against an in-state rival etc. I realize that Kravitz committed the mortal sin of contradicting the praise of Kevin Wilson before he has yet to be head coach for a single game (unless you count that year he was a high school head coach and went winless) but I don’t blame him for being a little leary about this guy. To be honest, I am too. Nearly every interaction he has had with the media he has come across as either a bafoon, completely disinterested, or both, he hasn’t exactly warmed up to the student body (especially a certain RA), alumni, or the community, and he seems to bring that Big XII/SEC style big time college football mentality where academics and everything else that happens on the University’s campus is merely a distraction to what’s really important: watching him coach on Saturdays in the Fall. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he’ll turn the program around and have a Bill Mallory-style run where he gets second and third rate athletes to overacheive and turn in respectable performances while running a clean and academically strong program, or perhaps he’ll even go beyond that. If that happens trust me I’ll admit that I’m wrong. For the time being, however, as an alumnus of IU I am not happy with the face that Wilson is putting on for the University, and the undeserved praise being thrown his way just makes matters worse in my opinion.

Look, nobody is mad at Kravitz for thinking IU is in for a rough season. That’s a reasonable position. He stumbles upon one every once in a while. He also writes a lot of nonsense, as is demonstrated in the links above. Again, this is a man who promoted John Calipari as IU’s coach after the Sampson debable. He is a garden-variety hair puller who has somehow conned his superiors at Gannett into thinking he is an edgy and important voice.

As for Wilson, yes, he’s a hothead, and I said in my post on the interview that I though he overreacted a bit. On the other hand, when Trudeau and the other guy hung up on him, Wilson had dialed it back and was talking about football. It isn’t just IU fans who took his side on that one. Pretty much everyone in the country who commented on it thought the radio guys looked worse than Wilson. As for the rest of it, Wilson has gotten excellent reviews from media with no reason to carry water for IU. Check out the Dave Revsine interview on Off Tackle Empire, for example. As for recruiting, any IU coach has to do more with less, but don’t forget, Mallory’s best teams weren’t just thrid tier recruits. Anthony Thompson and Dave Schnell were blue chippers, and Wilson seems to be heading down that road with Gunner Kiel.

As for academics, Wilson was by all accounts an excellent student. Other than Oklahoma, the schools where he has worked or played were UNC-Chapel Hill, Miami of Ohio, and Northwestern. Yeah, what a bunch of rogue programs there.

I think

Seriously, good points

And honestly, I wasn’t calling Kravitz a grumpus for this particular post anymore than I would call Dick Vitale a jackass for his preseason predictions. No, Kravitz has a long history of seeing the downside of everything IU-related that I won’t go into now. I’ll just say that I don’t agree with him much, so if he’s calling 4or 5 wins for IU, then I feel good about the Hoosiers’ chances of surpassing that.

Truthfully, my first reaction to the radio controversy was also one of apprehension. I remember enough of looking away sheepishly when Knight was at IU that I’m not looking forward to another antagonistic relationship with the media. That said, almost all of the spin and reaction has fallen Indiana’s way. It really has played in the rest of the media that Wilson won’t stand for his team to be the butt of cheap shots, and that’s not a bad thing. If the losses (and oh, there will be losses – it’ll probably be a couple of years before the program really starts to change) weigh too heavily on Wilson and his mental and emotional state takes a darker turn – then you won’t see me defending him. But I’m willing to give Wilson a chance.
