The ongoing mess up north and west

I know this is probably mean spirited, but it's at the expense of Purdue and Illinois, so I'm okay with it.

Since the Sampson fiasco, I've had to listen to my Purdue and Illinois friends crow about how they're the future of the Big Ten and we're the past, how their programs are so much better than ours, and so on and so forth. Nevermind the fact that we have five national championship banners hanging in the real Assembly Hall and they have a combined 1.

Well, Illinois fans are starting to turn on Webber (and rightfully so; he's terrible) and Painter appears to have one foot our the door at Purdue. In the meantime, IU is killing it on the recruiting trail and is probably a year away from respectability and two years away from contending, which as far as I'm concerned puts us right on schedule.

So yeah. I love watching the smoke over Urbana and West Lafayette. Anyone else feel the same?

I STILL don't think Painter is actually going anywhere.

It does say something, however, that he has to go so far as to meet with potential suitors in an effort to get the support/pay he feels he deserves. Things are obviously not all puppy-dogs and lollipops up in W. Lafayette.

I feel differently about the two

For reasons which I don’t fully comprehend (but which probably have something to do with deadbeat family members, and which you’re not interested in anyway), but I actively despise Illinois. I don’t like their fans (shout out to John’s best line ever: Duke’s arrogance and Iowa’s pedigree). And I really don’t like Weber: I hate his sideline antics and whining and I don’t think that he’s a good coach. He’s safe this year, I think. If he falls on his face next year, I would look for the Illini to make a change. I would say, “good riddance”, and gleefully enjoy any rebuilding period that they had to endure.

I don’t like Purdue. But I do have a grudging respect for their program. I actually kind of like Painter. I want to beat him every time. But I want the IU-Purdue rivalry to mean something. By contrast, I am happy to beat Illinois by 30 every time, and have them finish 12th in the conference. For the last three years, we’ve not held up our end of the Purdue rivalry bargain. I am hopeful that, for the years 2012 through eternity, IU and Purdue will duke it out for conference supremacy.

I still don’t think that Painter will leave, and don’t think that he should leave. If he does, I will be mildly amused, and mildly disappointed.

I respect Painter. He’s a good coach. He does things the right way.

I think Weber is slimy and whiny. His behavior after the Eric Gordon thing was unbelievable.

I want to see IU put both of these programs back in their place. For Purdue, that’s second to IU. For Illinois, it’s the bottom of the conference. I want playing IU to be like the Temple of Doom, where Tom Crean rips the heart out of their season at center court in Assembly Hall, and eats it as they watch.

OK, have you seen the way that the John Purdue Club has handled this?

Between the “zero tolerance” policy, every time Mike Davis opened his mouth, Kelvin Sampson, etc., etc., we are generally not in a position to throw stones regarding the administration of another school’s athletic department. But Purdue has resoundingly failed Public Relations 101. “If he goes, it’s all your fault”.

by hoosierdaddynow on Mar 29, 2011 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

I'll admit that the letter sent out was bad PR

but it’s mostly true. Purdue fans brag all the time about how their school pumps out the best engineers, pharmacists, business students, etc.. Well if all these kids are the tippy top recruits then why aren’t they getting high income jobs? And if they are getting high income jobs how come so few of them donate money to help ensure the success of their beloved basketball and football programs? And I hate hearing the, “In this economy money is tight for everyone” line. Bullshit. People making as much as Purdue fans claim they make shouldn’t have a problem filling out a donation card. I didn’t see any of us IU alumni crying poverty while we were in our ‘trailers’ writing checks to buy out Sampson.

If Painter goes it’s a result of complete Purdue fan apathy. They had, what, 10 people show up to their little rally yesterday? IU would’ve had thousands. In my opinion a fanbase as shitty as Purdue’s deserves it if they don’t retain such a high quality coach.

Since John vouches for TMill being a decent guy

I checked out Hammer & Rails yesterday. I think that the post was from Monday, but I was also surprised to find out that the athletic department has extended the left foot of fellowship to the blogging community. There’s been a lot of yarn spun over the past decade about how Purdue runs its athletic department the right way: the transitions from Keady to Painter and Tiller to Hope, and (in fairness) the way that IU’s athletic department has continually shot itself in the foot. Turns out, though, that Purdue’s athletic department is just a backwoods cheaply run general store. IU’s is far, far from perfect. But when you look at Cook Hall, the improvements to the football stadium, and even little things like credentialling bloggers (I may be wrong, but I believe that Inside the Hall has press privileges), we are light years beyond. If Painter leaves (and I still don’t think that he will), they will have a hard time attracting top talent to replace him.

Well you can't put it all on Purdue's athletic department.

There’s only so much you can do when you are short on funds. I do agree that as far as interaction with the blogging, student, and alumni communities IU does a very good job. They seem to seek out and then respond to input from the fans. I appreciate that they never force anything on us. They’ll try something and if the response is negative then they scrap it. Doesn’t seem to go that way up in W. Lafayette. Fans blame the AD who blame the fans who seem to get more listless by the day.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m glad I’m an IU fan.

I'm chuckling as my hatred for Purdue has taken over....

This ESPN article suggests that Painter is afraid of Tom Cream. Although who knows if its true, it certainly is a good think to think about. We’re on our way back and Painter knows it.

What’s worse is what’s happening in Bloomington, where Indiana coach Tom Crean, with a new, gleaming practice facility behind him, has lately boosted his recruiting efforts into the stratosphere. This fall, marquee recruit Cody Zeller arrives on campus, and Crean’s 2012 class — which is chock-full of top Indiana players — has a chance to be the best in the country. If you’re Painter, maybe you look at the future and wonder if the in-state tables have turned. Maybe you look at 2012, 2013 and beyond and wonder if Indiana’s supposed rise won’t increase the pressure to win in West Lafayette, Ind.

I think that there's zero chance that Painter is "afraid" of Crean

That’s total speculation on Eammon’s part in that blog post. I would take Keady’s word for it, that Painter is frustrated with the overall manner in which the program is run, the “nickel and dime” stuff. And I would guess that Cook Hall and the now steady stream of recruits committing to IU has made that disparity even more glaring for Painter. And really, that situation is more damning for Purdue than any insinuation that Painter is afraid of Crean.

I don’t think he’s “afraid” of Tom Crean. I actually respect the guy, unlike Bruce Weber, who I consider to be a whiny bitch.

However, I do think he realizes that with WaWuan Wohnson and E’Tuan Moore graduating, Hummel coming back from his second serious injury, and Crean seemingly having a direct pipeline to the heart of Indiana basketball, he’s going to find this state, and thus his recruiting base, to be slim pickings for the future.

Purdue fans can abide losing. God only knows they do enough of it. I just don’t think that they’ll abide losing to Indiana. They’ve gotten a taste of what it’s like to be the top dogs in Indiana, and losing it to IU will be a bitter, bitter shot to take.

yah I agree

I don’t think he is “afraid” per se, but I do think that he is nervously sweating looking at our recruiting classes. I’m sure we were on his mind when he was flirting with Mizzou.

My two best friends, both native Hoosiers like myself from Indianapolis, went to Illinois. We all attended North Central, so the Eric Gordon thing was a spark to gas.

Also, I lived in Chicago for two years, so I still have a few Illini friends up there.

I just can’t wait to shut their smug asses up.
