OT(ish) - It's March
And while the current version of our beloved Hoosiers, um, leaves us longing for the better days that lie ahead, we all still love basketball. Unfortunately, I have not been able to take in a whole lot of college or High School ball this year. So I appreciate your comments and observations on the following:
- Is Notre Dame legitimate, or with their three-point-reliant offense, are they a first weekend upset in the tournament just waiting to happen?
- Texas: just a rough patch or not really all that good?
- I am of the opinion that the Big Ten should only get five invitations to the tourney: tOSU, Purdue, Wisky, Illinois and Minnesota. I'd prefer that Michigan or Penn State get the nod over the Gophers. I could easily be talked into only 4 spots, and think that only Ohio State and Purdue live beyond the first weekend.
- Beyond the IU recruits, who are you watching in the high school tournaments? We have seen over the past three years what Zeller can do. I am particularly interested to see how Etherington responds when the pressure is on, and everyone out there will be keying on him. I sense that he's a Sheehey type player -- and I love that I can use that kind of compliment at this point in Will's career -- and I want to see him step up.
- I assume that TMill is trolling, so I'll ask: is Kokomo for real? What is their draw and how far can they legitimately go? Also, is there DI talent on that roster, or some other mojo?

1. I think that Notre Dame is a Sweet 16 team, probably not quite as good as the record and rankings suggest. If you look at ND’s Pomeroy numbers, the Irish are three point reliant, but not absurdly so, and they do a lot of things well on offense, including taking care of the ball. They also have decent size for a perimeter-oriented team. As with any Brey-coached team, defense and road play are the big question marks. ND’s D is better than usual, and they did win at Pitt, but have had some rough performances away from South Bend. Still, what they did to Villanova last night was impressive. But to answer your question, everyone is a first round upset waiting to happen, especially this year.
2. Texas. I have no idea. I haven’t really watched them. Texas almost always seems to fall back to the pack. Speaking of the Big 12, it looks like Doc Sadler will be bringing more than his awesome name to the conference when Nebraska joins up next year. The Huskers have an outside chance at making the NCAA and have only one senior who plays meaningful minutes.
3. Purdue, OSU, and Wisconsin are in. Illinois is in absent an implosion that I hope IU can supply. I still think MSU will make it. Michigan might. Minnesota, now 6-10, is toast. I try to avoid getting hung up on what number a conference deserves. Sometimes a conference is strong top to bottom but has only 3 or 4 teams with an NCAA resume. Sometimes there are 7 really good teams and 5 that are garbage.
4. I’m not paying much attention, other than watching highlights on the news. It’s a shame, and the bigger shame is that class basketball means that the 4A schools get the bulk of the attention. I do hope that Etherington does well, which will be more difficult without his brother. With all of IU’s commits and targets, there are a lot of teams to follow.
5. Shows that I don’t even follow 4A that closely that I didn’t know that Kokomo was having a good year. As a graduate of a small school in the shadow of the North Central Conference, I have a love/hate relationship with those schools, but it is sad to see the overall decline of most of those towns and their basketball programs. And, of course, class basketball means that most of those great gyms sit empty during the state tournament. The Wigwam and the Tiernan Center (Richmond) are vacant this week. The Muncie Fieldhouse hosts a 3A sectional hosted by Southside. Also empty this week are Washington and Southport, although those gyms host later tournament action.
I trust Travis will be wearing his Jimmy Rayl jersey at Conseco if the Wildkats make it that far.

I like playing "guess John's high school"
Here’s what we know: small school in the shadow of the NCC; doesn’t like Painter, aside from the obvious reasons, because he went to Delta. Here are my guesses: Madison Grant, Mississinewa, Blackford, Winchester. I’m sure I am missing something.
Deserving of it’s own fanpost: favorite high school gyms.
Deserving of its own fan poll (but I’m not sophisticated enough to pull it off): More annoying: “Boiler Up” or the spelling of “Wildkats”.

You are in the right ballpark on the size of the school. Not as big as the NCC schools, not as tiny as, say, Cowan or Lapel. Geographically, you practically have it surrounded.
Final clue: I have often said that I could forgive Painter for going to Purdue or for going to Delta, but not both.

Gotta be honest
We’ve pretty much exhausted my knowledge of the school systems in northern Delaware County. Yorktown?

psh!
Northern Indiana basketball is not real basketball. Gotta come down south to get a real game.

Don't make us break out the inbred jokes, AJ
You know what sucks, though, about class basketball (among many, many other things) is the way it screwed up the geography of the whole thing. Used to be you knew you had 4 teams coming to Indy to settle it: one from Indy, one from Fort Wayne, one from Gary and one from Evansville. And while you might not normally care for Whitko or Concord or Marion, you pulled for them because they at least came out of your Semistate. Scratch that: you never cheered for Marion. Still, now, at least in the girls tournaments, they don’t even deterrmine the location of the semistate games until after the regionals have been played. Ack.

I hate 4 class basketball
Soccer is just about to class and I think they’re doing it right. 2 classes, >1000 students and <1000 students. I think that is the best way to do it. The gimungous schools can fight it out and the tiny-medium sized schools can fight it out. Then I wouldn’t be too upset to see the winner of each class go head to head. That would be fun.

Ah, another sign that I’m getting old. You’re a senior in college but you don’t remember the ill-fated “Tournament of Champions.” Scroll down to 1998 and 1999. The TOC actually produced some decent games, but was played in Hinkle in front of meager crowds.
I know that this is almost as unlikely as going back to the old tournament, but I think a decent compromise would be having class basketball but limiting in to the sectional the the regional. The sectional and regional would whittle each of the four classes down to four teams each. Then, we would have the old-fashioned two game semistates, but with each semistate consisting of a 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A team. This would give the small schools a chance to make some noise but would result in the crowning of only one state champ.

Oh, and another thing. I’m glad that the NCAA stood at the precipice and backed away from the 96 team tournament, avoiding the odd decision to turn the best two days in all of sport into something resembling the NIT. Still, the people who brought us FBS and FCS still couldn’t quite avoid some douchebaggery. Now that there are four “play-in” games, they have decided that the round of 64 is the “second round” and the round of 32 is the “third round.” This is just goddamn brainless. For 60 of the 68 teams in the field, the round of 64 is the first round. for the last 26 years, the round of 64 has been the first round. But now, it’s all out of whack. I guess I’ll have to refer to them as the “round of 64” and “round of 32.” I know that the NCAA doesn’t like the “play in” terminology. Fine. Call it the “preliminary round” and leave the rest of the jargon alone. These people are neither leaders nor legends.
