Where is everybody?

I'm aware that IU basketball isn't all that impressive right now and IU football hasn't been decent for a couple decades, but I still feel like the community here isn't anywhere close to what it could be. There are thousands of Colts fans over at Stampede Blue and even a decent showing at Indy CornRows, but this place is flippin' dead. I feel like 30% or more of Colts fans are also IU basketball fans so I don't get what the issue is. Regardless of why the traffic in here is so slow those of us who do patron the site need to do something to get people in here. I thoroughly enjoy discussing IU basketball even when we don't have a championship contending team. I'd like to have an online venue to do that.

Star-divide

I don't know about anyone else, but commenting on the occasional IU article over at indystar.com isn't cutting it. So whoever reads this do me a favor and hype this place up some. I'm going to try to bring some people over from battleredblog (where a lot of the more passionate Colts fans hang out) to get some conversations going. I'm also planning on writing more fanposts from now on. It's pretty pathetic when the Purdue site is hoppin like 21 jump street and we're getting 5 comments per game recap. I don't like losing to Purdue. At anything. Stop making me sad. Damn the man. Save the empire.

I think one of the problems is....

that on Yahoo sports, the sites such as Stampede Blue and Indy Cornrows, automatically appear under the “My teams” section but this site does not. I would guess that this makes a big difference as far as readership goes.

That could easily have something to do with it.

I’m sure there are a lot of factors that come into play. I just feel like out of all the Indiana Sports Nation college blogs IU should have the largest following.

I think that the Yahoo/Rivals partnership prevents a relationship between Yahoo and the SB Nation college blogs. We do get traffic from CBS Sportsline and some other sites.

A few quick thoughts in response:

1. For the most part, the pro sports SBN blogs put even the most widely read college blogs to shame in terms of traffic and participation. I think it’s a combination of the limited number of professional teams and the lack of something along the lines of the communities that Rivals and Scout have for college.

2. I need to produce more content, either personally or with help. My family and work circumstances are such that I don’t write as much as I used to do. Along those lines, if any of you have any interest in being contributing writers, or know anyone who might, then please drop me an e-mail. I generally prefer to consider those with blogging experience, but that’s not a firm requirement.

3. I do think the losing on the part of the football and basketball programs over the last three years has had an impact. I moved to SBN in March 2009. Since then over the course of 45 Big Ten football and basketball games, the teams have combined for 9 Big Ten wins.

Content always helps.

It gives people a reason to stop by more often. But more than anything I’m amazed at how few people comment on game threads, pre-game analysis, and post-game recaps. That’s where good conversations can get going. I have to assume hundreds of times more people read those articles than comment on them. More than anything I’m just trying to get people to comment. It never bothered me until I realized how much more active the Purdue site is.

Well, one of the problems with the game threads is that I’m not always able to participate. I have young kids who go to bed at 8 p.m., so if it’s a weeknight game that starts before eight, I generally record the game and start catching up later—i.e., I can’t comment live. I would make an exception for the Purdue game, but tonight I have a professional commitment that will prevent me from watching at all until after it’s over. By all means, jump in and I’ll try to comment when I can.

An important thing to remember about the Purdue site is that while the traffic there is good, it’s not exponentially better than here. Hammer and Rails gets about three times the traffic that I do, but from the level of participation you would think it’s thirty times the traffic. In other words, the critical mass isn’t that far off.

I assumed that was the case.

I don’t care too much about the page views – no offense – it’d just be nice if there was more participation from the people who do come to the site. I want it to get rowdy up in here from time to time.

Curious about the traffic

I am starting to average about 2,000-2,500 hits per day. January was my best month ever by far, hitting almost 69,000 visits.

Since the beginning of football season I have been averaging about 20,000 a month, with a high of 25,000 in November. So, I guess that’s an average of about 660 a day. My point wasn’t that your traffic isn’t better than mine—obviously it is—but that if you judged by comments and participation, you would think it is much more lopsided than it is.

P.S. I’ll be a shameless whore and ask that you promote this place. Follow @crimsonquarry on twitter. Follow, or like, or whatever it is now, the Crimson Quarry facebook page and share articles with your newsfeed.

Well if John would just make up random outrageous crap

about Tom Crean dating a hooker or something I’m sure he’d get the page hits that StampedeBlue gets.

That being said, I think the largest issue with traffic here is that Inside the Hall kinda has a monopoly on IU basketball coverage because of certain press perks and larger writing staffs. Perhaps if you’d like some help John, wink wink nudge nudge. ;-)

I'll agree with that.

I just like SN’s commenting format. That’s why I’d just assume more people be here.

I really just use SBN to comment on pro teams.

A lot of people use HoosierNation on the scout website to talk about IU hoops. That’s where I post when discussing IU basketball as well.
