New Uni's??

I just have a simple question. Are the Hoosiers ever going to update the basketball jerseys? Don't get me wrong, I love the current duds, but in my opinion, if you're going to be a nationally recognized team in college sports, you need to have the newest and the best uniforms, which is clearly something IU doesn't have, considering they layout for our uni's have been the same since, well, basically forever. I personally am a huge fan of Gonzaga and Syracuse's uniforms.

I doubt there will be more than subtle changes. And there have been some changes over the years. While the basic design remains the same, over the years the cut of the uniform, the font of “INDIANA” on the chest, the font of the interlock IU, and even the color have changed (the last two when IU did its department wide makeover in 2002). Here is Jordan Hulls as a freshman:

And last year, in the current uniform:

The font, the cut, and the fabric are noticeably different.

Here’s how IU looked in 2002:

In 1992:

And in 1975:

The changes haven’t been radical, but the cut and color have been modificed over the years. IU’s uniform design has become a pretty big part of IU’s identity in the mind of IU fans, so I don’t think radical changes are in store. And it’s not just IU. Other historically elite programs such as UCLA and North Carolina haven’t changed much over the years—UCLA’s design is basically what they have had since the Wooden era, and UNC’s haven’t changed much since a design shift in the late 80s or early 90s.

In short, IU has one of the few highly recognizable brands in college basketball. I don’t think we will mess with it much, and don’t think we should mess with it much.

It will always be Indiana on the front

and the same basic crimson color. I don’t think they’ll ever deviate from the larger design. Font and cut may change but that is it. Don’t think they’ll ever go to the tight Syracuse/Oregon cuts that everyone seems to be switching to. Not “traditional” enough for the university.

The sportswear company has an affect...

Nike is responsible for those tighter cuts we see on ‘Cuse, UK, and the like. Also, in 2002 those were Nike unis (before the modern tight-fit trend), and not the Adidas ones we have now. The post-2002 changes in design culminated in the switch to Adidas once the Nike contract was up. Nike tends to be flashier in their designs, but probably would have created a tighter version of our current classic design (which frankly wouldn’t be so bad) if the department had not made the switch to Adidas (thankfully they didn’t go with Underarmor). The department gets final approval over designs, and could have directed Nike to stick with the candy stripes even if the cuts got tighter (Duke is an example of this, maintaining the same side panelings they’ve had for as long as I can remember). Adidas tends to be more conservative in their designs, though. Just look at Notre Dame, Michigan, UCLA, and the like for examples of this. Louisville, Wisconsin, and Kansas would be “radical” Adidas unis.

True, but the school still retains some control, if it wants, and I’m sure for a price. Duke has Nike uniforms with a more traditional cut.

Times change and the uniforms have changed with them.

The most noticeable change has been the color. That changed big time between the 2001-2002 season (see photo) and Bracey Wright’s first year (i.e. the year of the makeover) when they significantly darkened the crimson color. I hated it. I thought the darker jerseys made Indiana look more like Alabama. I think they’ve lightened the red in future years but it’s still not the same shade it was in 2002 and before.

But no, I’d be seriously pissed if they ever radically changed the overall uniform design. That look is iconic. It’s the signature look of one of the premiere basketball programs in the country, and it should never be radically altered.

I think keeping the tradition in Indiana Basketball is what makes us who we are.

WE ARE BIG RED!

probably not...

no… Can’t imagine anyone being OK with names on the back. That tradition train is in full motion and would be hard to reverse course on.

anybody else remember when Mike Davis

Suggested that IU put names on the back? Man, that guy did not know how to play to his audience. And for that guileless honesty, I kinda loved him. If only he could’ve made in-game adjustments…
And yeah, I’m with John & AJ. Let’s be proud of our traditions as Hoosiers!

Yes. He finally relented, saying he would do it if he won a championship. Who could have known that he would come so close?

I think Davis wanted to ditch the warmups as well.

They should never change

Candystripes are to IU, what pinstripes are to the Yankees. They should not go away. The school knows this. Red and white striping are incorporated into the program’s DNA. Just look at the walls behind the championship banners in Assembly Hall. Its in the warmups, the shorts, the jerseys, the walls, the cheerleader unis, and the fans in stands. Its recognized nationally – ESPN U has a candystripped “U” logo that flashes before IU highlights. Traditions help sell programs, and the schools know this. Its brand marketing. A few years ago, one of Crean’s assistants started wearing the stripe pants on recruiting trips so kids knew they were being scouted by IU during times in the year when coaches are not allowed to make direct contact. Its part of the program’s identity, and it should not be changed.

I completely don’t get this argument. You say that Indiana needs to change its uniforms in order to be “nationally recognized,” but what is more recognizable than Indiana’s uniforms? Because they’re simple and essentially haven’t changed since the 1970’s, IU probably has the most universally known basketball unis outside of North Carolina’s argyle siding unis (who also benefit from never changing things up). Keep the uniforms the way they are, part of the appeal of Indiana basketball is that things pretty much stay the same, at least visually.

All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia
