Visiting UK fan story on KSR.com

Anyone witness anything remotely similar to this in B-town on Saturday? Not that I would be shocked, since it seems this is the way of the B1G student fan these days (I call it the Naperville effect), but was it pervasive? Also, check out the comments. I'll admit I was sort of trolling the site, but kind of surprised (not really) to find that trolls from that other school made it there as well.

I wasn’t in Bloomington, so I can’t comment about the atmosphere. So, allow me to comment on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a bit ugly. It was a huge game for IU, a close game all the way, and the tipoff time probably led to a well-lubricated crowd. There’s also the fact that for all the debate about whether we care more about beating Purdue or beating Kentucky, there is no program for which IU fans have less respect than UK. Now, to any UK fan reading this, I’m not saying that this is true or justified, but I think the typical IU fan views UK’s program as a corrupt basketball factory and nearly everything UK has accomplished. I think the resentment is amplified when IU’s program hit rock bottom over NCAA violations that while shameful, pale in comparison to what has gone on at UK over the years, and in the very same timeframe that UK has rebuilt its program by hiring a guy who doesn’t enjoy a good reputation (again, not saying Cal’s reputation is deserved, but it exists). In my experience, IU fans dislike Purdue but are enraged by Kentucky. I don’t say any of that to excuse rude behavior, but to say it wouldn’t surprise me if it were a bit ugly in the bars this weekend.

That said, the part of the story that doesn’t ring true is the idea that everyone was in on it, that absolutely no one was decent to them. And, of course, it’s odd that they mention nothing of how they were treated inside Assembly Hall. As far as I could tell, all of the anecdotes came from inside bars. It would seem that the treatment inside the game, sitting in close quarters to IU fans and under the supervision of IU officials, would have merited mention one way or the other. The omission makes me think it was fine in the arena, which is the part most directly under IU’s control.

I am of the same mind as this

It doesn’t surprise me one bit. There seems to be some genuine hatred of UK in these parts. Even with Purdue it is a disliking but still chivalrous for the most part. When the Kentucky week rolled around I have never seen more venom spill from IU fans comments in the whole time I’ve been paying attention to such things. There is a perception of UK here in Indiana and it isn’t good. Hell, Purdue fans feel pretty similar from some of my experiences dealing with the cross over of those two fan bases.

I’d imagine in The Hall, besides maybe an asshole chant or two if they got too near a large group of seated students, their experience was likely pleasant. I have seen ushers and the IU administration lock down harassment of fans pretty quickly. Of course when you go into a bar, you’re putting yourself at the mercy of emotion and alcohol.

I would expect the same treatment from drunk people at any bar

Regardless of the fan base. I made the mistake of cheering for the Colts ONCE at a Steelers bar in Chicago and had things thrown at me. Of course, I’m the type to enjoy stuff like that, and I realize I was asking for it. I think Indiana has a poor opinion of the people and state of Kentucky, period. And from the comments that I’ve read, it’s mutual.

I have questions about the account

I have seen some video posted online of chants that the students were doing at the game that I didn’t agree with (maybe I’m just old at 35 now?), but if what UK fans are saying happened at Assembly Hall (getting pushed, tapped on the head, drinks thrown at them, etc.) really happened, why didn’t they tell an usher? Also, where exactly were they sitting? If you were sitting in the student section with a UK shirt on, you’re lucky you got out alive, in my opinion. I mean, who does that? Morever, having been to probably close to 50 games there, the seats are very small, and shit happens. I could see someone getting a knee in the back because the space between the rows is so tiny and taking that as being intentional if they are overly-sensitive and over-reacting.

Also, the guy says he bought tix from the IU ticket office. Is he a season ticket holder? How is this even possible? Anyway, even I, as a life-long diehard IU fan, wouldn’t have picked Kilroy’s as the bar to go to after the game. I think the same guy is going on all of the websites and posting versions of the same story, which is probably somewhere between exaggerated and totally apocryphal. Do we really think they politely strolled in to a bar on Kirkwood in their UK attire and said nothing? That in itself is begging for a reaction, but maybe that’s just me.

I don't know, I would like to think that I should be able to go to a bar or restaurant in Lexington after we'd played there.

It certainly can’t be good for business if Bloomington bars develop a reputation for environments hostile toward visiting fans, even if the number of visiting fans and corresponding bad experiences are vanishingly small.

Yeah, I’m with the developing consensus here: too much of this story sounds fishy or raises questions about the author. And much of it reeks of sour grapes and oversensitivity.

Part of me wonders how much hyperbole was written into that story. But regardless, if even a 10th of it were true, it's inexcusable.

Maybe I’m just an older fart (only in my 40’s), but I don’t see why anyone would even need to sneer at a UK fan in Bloomington. I wouldn’t expect to get openly abused in a Lexington bar if I had on my IU colors. I’d expect to get some taunting, and some verbal grief, but actual malicious abuse would be out of line.

And while I wouldn’t go out of my way to befriend a UK fan if I saw one in Bloomington, I sure as HELL wouldn’t go out of my way to abuse them or even make fun of them to their faces. If they were friendly, sure, some fun back and forth is just fan behavior, but again, actual abuse is going too far.

Part of me hopes that there was a lot of exaggeration in that story. I was actually downtown right after the game, and drove past both Sports as well as Kilroy’s on Kirkwood. I saw a little bit of rowdy behavior – not anywhere near as much as the ‘01-’02 season’s Final Four evenings (yes, I was in Bloomington for that too… heck, I was here for the 1992 Final Four) – but nothing that seemed malicious, or even that far out of line. Heck, no one was dancing on cars yet, and I was still able to drive past. But at the same time, a crowd can turn ugly in an instant (anyone who’s experienced Little 500’s in the late 80’s and early 90’s can attest to that; just look at the pictures from the ‘87 Arbutus – that’s the yearbook, for non-IU folks reading this- and the water canons and riot cops. Things can turn quickly). And that’s what worries me: I can’t disprove the allegations. I can only say I didn’t see it myself.

I’m hoping that with some success comes some sanity. After the ‘92 Final Four loss, Kirkwood wasn’t even that crowded (at least when I was there. Admittedly very, very late). I love exuberance – for the first time in years, I not only didn’t mind the court rush, but felt it was entirely justifiable – but I hate that such things can go wrong in a crowd very fast. When IU starts winning, I think some of the more passionate people will start to calm down and understand how to behave. It’s new to some folks. Hopefully, it’ll become old hat and we won’t hear any of those types of stories ever again.

Oh, and to answer the original question: No. I didn't see anything even remotely bad.

The worst were people dodging in and out of traffic on Kirkwood after the game. Hell, I nearly plastered 5 of them myself at the corner of Dunn and Kirkwood; thank God for good brakes! Anyway, sure, that’s dangerous, but emotionally it’s also quite tame. Especially in comparison to the accusations made in that KSR article.

Ha

That’s how people walk across the street every day here. :)

Yeah, I know. I've driven downtown Chicago before.

Thing is, it happens in Bloomington too; it’s just not usually 5 people all at once darting in front of you. Usually, it’s one at the corner, another one midway up the block, a couple of them at the next corner…
