Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Indiana releases Hoosiers' 2010-11 basketball schedule.

While the rough outlines have been known for a while, IU finally has released the Hoosiers' full 2010-11 schedule.  The full schedule is below the fold, but a few initial thoughts:

  • This is a schedule built for wins. The non-conference (with 2010 Pomeroy ratings noted) does include true road games against Kentucky (3) and Boston College (62), neutral site games against Northern Iowa (29) and either Colorado (86) or New Mexico (54) in Las Vegas, and a home game against Wright State (65).  All other non-conference games except those listed above are at home, and the highest rated team among the best of the rest is Evansville (213), and the remaining seven teams are ranked 290 or worse among ~345 Division I teams.
  • Given the above, eight non-conference wins is an absolute bare minimum, even if we have another horrible injury.  The games against Wright State and either New Mexico and Colorado in Vegas strike me as the keys to the non-conference schedule.  While I certainly, certainly am not predicting a 12-1 non-conference finish, the game against Kentucky in Lexington is the only single game in which a win would shock me.
  • This was known already, based on last season's schedule, but IU's no-plays are at home against Michigan State (the only game is in East Lansing) and at Penn State (IU will not make the trip to the site of its only Big Ten road win of the last two seasons  and we moved our Penn State home game to the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.  Not really.).
  • Nothing about the Big Ten schedule jumps out at me.  There aren't any long road trips or homestands, and the quality mix seems pretty even.  The only exception to that is in the last four games, where IU plays Purdue, at Ohio State, Wisconsin, and at Illinois.

As I said, you can read the whole thing below the fold.  I welcome your thoughts.

Definitely looking for wins

Won’t help our bubble chances if we are even in that position (optimistic…), but I hope easing the team into the Big Ten is going to help them. I’m certainly not upset about fabricating a few W’s. It cannot be a bad thing right now to see some wins.

And I feel kind of betrayed that Kentucky/Indiana is not on CBS. Just feels a little wrong to watch it on ESPN.

I meant to mention the UK game. I have a vague recollection of that horrible 30 point loss in 1996 being on ESPN, but that game almost always is on CBS.

Thought about that one after I posted. That was the year that Dane Fife, of all people, hit a three that sent the game to overtime. I assume that photo was from after Knight got T-ed up in overtime. I always thought Knight’s technicals were pretty well-timed, either to light a fire under the team or to let off some steam in a game that was a lost cause, but I was really pissed at him for that one.

Let's not overlook that Northern Iowa game.

That’s a very, very solid program. I know the Kentucky game will be widely seen as the barometer by which this iteration of the Hoosiers will be judged, but I think the Northern Iowa game is the non-conference matchup I’m most interested in, by far.

The last four games will be a challenge, for sure.

I am interested to see how they do against UK

But, realistically, the barometer for this team is the games vs. Wright State, Boston College, Northern Iowa and New Mexico/Colorado. There are 8 non-conference gimmes. We should expect them to win all of those. We should not expect them to beat UK. They can win all 4 of these other games. I do not expect them to do so. I would measure it a success if they could win three of those; a push if they win two, and a disappointment if they win less than 2 of those.

As for the Big Ten, I’d like to see them win 8 and a conference tourney game. That would put them somewhere between 18-20 wins. That’s not enough to get them into the NCAA. But it’s a good progression from where we have been 2011-12 is the year we start to make hay.

Agree wholeheartedly

…with your assessment that this schedule is built for wins. Post-season conversations, even those that feature the letters N, I, and T, need to include Indiana this season. It’s not easy to anticipate how long the fans’ willingness to tolerate the amount of losses we’ve piled up over the past 2 post-apocalyptic years will last, though I have to assume we’re in the eleventh hour. I, for one, feel that a winning season is a must. While finding ourselves on the NCAA Tournament bubble is certainly a longshot, I suspect we’ll see quite a bit of growth from this group of young players, and a schedule that is conducive to racking up some early victories is fine by me.

Why is it that the road trip to Purdue is an ESPN telecast while the game in Bloomington, which I can only assume given recent history will be a better contest, is relegated to the BTN? Far be it for me to find much logic in the decision-making at ESPN, though.

I believe a .500 record and the ability...

…to compete with quality teams in the Big Ten will appease most, especially when combined with the growing recruiting success that Coach Crean is having. As part of the 5 year plan I had envisioned to be necessary to rebuild this program, I feel we’re right on schedule.

I agree that the game in Bloomington should have been the televised one… but I suspect they’re more interested in showcasing a potentially high level team in Purdue than in airing a good contest.

by LTTelamon on Aug 26, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be willing to believe a sub .500 record

Would suffice if the team shows growth and the ability to seriously compete. The pre-conference schedule should appease the fans who are looking for wins, but I think a 5-13 or 6-12 BT record wouldn’t be condemnable if they’re going to the wire and showing growth against the best of the Big Ten (hopefully stealing a couple) while getting their few wins from the lowest tier.

I still don’t think we’re at a point where we can honestly pencil in Big Ten wins, but I think the fans are still going to be patient if the progress is showing up on the floor even if they aren’t leaving with the victory.

Sort of a meta-comment...

John has posted a lot of good stuff this summer previewing the football team.
The football season starts next week.
This post may have generated more discussion than all of the football posts combined.
Maybe we are just a hoops school?!

Our hoops team is still better than our football team...

but I, personally, love IU football and am very excited for this season. The schedule is a bit weak, sure, but getting to a bowl (hopefully) will be good for the school.

Hopefully we have a real OOC game or two next year, but we could get more of the same OOC because we’ll be breaking in a new QB (Hopefully… because Chappell plays every game this season if he can stay healthy)

While things could change because of the conference expansion, the football team has another game with Virginia coming up, along with games with Missouri, Wake Forest, and Navy scheduled in the next few years.

by Jimmy0 on Aug 27, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm looking forward to better ooc games

I liked our series with Kentucky, and generally think scheduling one or two lower-tier BCS teams is a good idea. The games are a better draw and they are better preparation for conference play. Yes, the trip to Virginia didn’t work out so well last season, but the scheduling level is appropriate.

by nothsa on Aug 28, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

We will see whether the trend holds up with the apparent plan to expand to a nine-game Big Ten schedule in 2015. The UVa, Mizzou, and Navy series all will be over by 2014, but I wonder if the South Florida series, which was delayed until 2015 and 2016, will ever happen. My feelings are mixed on the nine game schedule. I think playing intersectional games is one of the traditions that make college football great (something that has been damaged by recent scheduling trends). Part of me says that if IU were going to play nine major conference opponents every year, I would rather play 8 Big Ten games and a nonconference game. On the other hand, assuming, as is widely assumed, that the Big Ten will have a crossover game protected, then an eight game schedule wouldn’t allow a home-and-home with every conference school in a four year period. Expanding to nine would solve that problem, but creates scheduling and fairness issues (schools won’t have the same number of home games) and seems likely to further damage nonconference scheduling.

If we're not at .500 with this schedule

Then something is seriously wrong in Assembly Hall. Not saying a sub- .500 season can’t happen, but this team went most of the year without its top player and still could’ve had a good shot at .500, if it could’ve avoided the December upsets and ever been able to avoid getting swept by llinois (a better team) or Iowa (a worse team).
Honestly, the Hoosiers should have a much more experienced crew, more capable height in the paint with Michel, actual three-point threats with Creek & Roth returning, and some athleticism off the bench with Oladipo.
The Hoosiers should be 10-3 at worst in the non-conference schedule (okay, 9-4) and 7-11 in the Big Ten. I’m picking 7 wins because they’ll probably lose two games they shouldn’t (NU at home, at Mich?) and win one that noone expects (UW at home?). That’s 16-15 for low expectations, and I would say maybe 18 or 19 wins overall for high expectations.
Expecting IU to be in the bubble conversation is probably a bit premature, though. Give them a year and they’ll bring everyone in the rotation back except Rivers, and who knows- maybe add BJ Young and/or Cody Zeller and the Hoosiers will be back on the national radar again.

I won't guess at a W-L record...

But I fully expect this team to finish in the middle of the pack this year. Anything less would disappoint me.

What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw
