IU alumnus Shaun Micheel leads US Open after day 1.

PEBBLE BEACH, CA - JUNE 17: Former Indiana University golfer Shaun Micheel is tri-leader of the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Former Indiana golfer Shaun Micheel is in a three way tie for the lead after the first day of the US Open at Pebble Beach.  Micheel is best remembered for his out-of-nowhere win in the 2003 PGA Championship.  That major championship remains Micheel's only win on the PGA Tour,  although he did finish second to Tiger Woods at the 2006 PGA.  As the link above makes clear, Micheel has struggled with various medical problems, including low testosterone and a left shoulder problem that led to surgery.  Micheel was the 1991 Big Ten individual champion and is the only former IU player to have won a major championship.  While day one leaders aren't always in the mix on Sunday, this is worth watching over the weekend.  Be sure to check out SB Nation's golf blog, Waggle Room.
