What happened to Jay Edwards?

I see the DTN sho all about the 89 B11 basketball season where Iowa, IU, Michicgan and Illinois all had great teams. IU was of course led by Jay Edwards who was the Freshman of the year the previous year. In 89 he was named the Conference player of the year and averaged over 20 pts a game. I vaguely remembered Jay because I grew up on the Iowa-Illinois border, so I looked him up. He was taken in the second round of the NBA which shocked me because he seemed like a great player. Then he only played in a handful of NBA games, and the bio ends. What happened to Jay Edwards basketball career? Where is he now?

He probably left too early. Things seemed a bit out of control for Edwards at the end. He left school before the end of the semester, had some criminal issues, and never seemed to get it together. Edwards had some drug trouble at the end of his freshman year but Knight let him back on the team. It’s hard to imagine he would have lasted four years in Bloomington, but it would have been better for him if he had. Definitely seemed to be more of a mental/character issue that led to his demise than anything else.

Drugs and parking tickets, as I recall.

Didn’t Jay run up a bunch of parking violations? Great, great shooter (maybe the best at Indiana since the beginning of the Bob Knight era, which is saying something), but self-control issues. In retrospect it’s hard to believe he lasted as long as he did under Bob Knight.

Jay was a great Indiana high school basketball player, too; he won three state titles for the Marion Giants; they went 85-4 while he was on the varsity. I was in the stands for one of those losses, a game where Jay dominated but his game-winning shot bounced off at the buzzer.
