Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

Wisconsin 83, Indiana 55: the struggles continue.

What can I say?  The Hoosiers turned in their third consecutive disastrous performance.  The Hoosiers turned in their worst performance of the year in turnovers (by percentage) and among the worst in defensive efficiency (second-worst after Kentucky).  IU was brutal on defense, the Badgers shot the lights out, and the Hoosiers were outrebounded as well.  It's been over 24 hours, I wasn't able to watch the game, but listening to it convinced me that watching it would have provided little more insight.  Wisconsin extended its lead to 20 fewer than 8 minutes into the game, and IU never got closer than 16.  I don't know what the answer is.  The team isn't improving at all.  The schedule gets tougher.  The play in the last three games wouldn't be good enough to compete in any of IU's remaining games, so either the team will get better, or will get drilled a couple of times a week for the next month until it mercifully comes to an end on a Thursday afternoon at Conseco Fieldhouse.  Again.  I hope it gets better, but have no objective reason to think it will.

Definitely no improvement here, but I think these last few games are really a case of a young team of frosh and sophs just getting exhausted after a tough up-and-down stretch. I think those back-to-back wins against PSU and Minnesota got their chests puffed out a little bit, they probably took the Iowa game slightly for granted, and they bounced back against Illinois and Purdue only to be handed two gut-puncher losses. This is where having one or two strong seniors/juniors would be invaluable, but we’re just going to have to wait until the kids grow up a little more.

Hopefully they can at least regain some competitiveness the last few weeks though!

I think you’re right from a logical perspective, it’s just hard to watch, particularly the mistakes, including poor shot selection and turnovers. I recognize that Crean is in a next to impossible situation, and doesn’t want to break the team. But dammit, any Jeremiah Rivers shot from outside 10 feet should result in a damn-the-consequences benching for 10 minutes.

Definitely hard to watch, and I think you’re being a little generous with the 10-foot rule. I’d give Rivers layups and dunks, and anything else means a seat on the bench for a few. And while I was at it, I might request Dumes stays within the 30-foot mark when he shoots.
I feel bad for Crean though – he gets so intense, I keep expecting his head to explode one of these games.
