Hoosier Headlines for July 1, 2009: closing the book on Sampson, basketball recruiting, football  recruiting.

  • Wyoming's Black commits to IU | Cincinnati.com | Cincinnati.Com: A bit more on this recent commitment to IU. Black's brother Larry Black is currently a member of the Hoosiers.  The Indy Star also has some quotes from Black.

  • IU gets eighth commit (IndyStar.com): Marlandez Harris is a 6-4 offensive lineman who had offers from Purdue and Louisville.

  • Recruiting mysteries explained (The News-Sentinel): Sigh. DiPrimio usually has some of the best IU coverage anywhere, but this is dense. I would bet that every school in the country has more offers out than it has scholarships available. That has been the case forever. It's not the same thing as oversigning, which is legal (by one, I think) and which IU did last year. This is just an odd article for a guy who has covered IU and college athletics for decades. Offering a bunch of scholarships isn't comparable to oversigning, and neither are remotely comparable to John Calipari kicking four returning players off the team.

  • NCAA rejects Kelvin Sampson's appeal - Los Angeles Times: what a surprise.

  • An administrative matter of possible interest (The Hoosier Scoop): Chris Korman, who has done a great job the last few years covering IU for the Bloomington Herald-Times, is now the H-T's sports editor. Congrats, Chris, and I hope this won't make you scarce on The Hoosier Scoop. Oh, and how about taking down that subscription wall?
