Hoosier Headlines for June 8, 2009.
Slim pickings in the June doldrums, but here we go:
- According to the official IU site, Eric Arnett, Josh Phegley, and Alex Dickerson all received some all-American recognition from Ping.
- The Indiana Daily Student profiles Dan Dakich's career moves in the last two years, from Bowling Green head coach to IU director of basketball operations to IU assistant coach to IU interim head coach to Indianapolis radio host. By the way, if you haven't listened to Dakich's show, you should. If he's typical of the coaching profession, he'll get the bug and return to the sidelines again, but he's an excellent interviewer and his knowledge of sports goes far beyond basketball. I don't listen on the radio but do download the podcasts of his interviews.
- Speaking of longtime IU athletic department employees, the Gary Post-Tribune profiles Mark Deal, IU's assistant director of football operations who has held a variety of posts during his time at IU. Unsurprisingly, Deal is optimistic about the 2009 Hoosiers. It would be more newsworthy if an athletic department acknowledged pessimism about the season, but we'll take what we can get at this point.

Enjoy Dakich's Show
On what little I’ve heard on it. My car doesn’t even pick up AM stations, not that I listen to a lot of radio anyway, but he’s been really good in the stuff I’ve heard him do.
And congrats to our baseball guys for the All-American love, but I’ll note that the link in that blurb is the same one about optimism in the IU football program. ?? That little statement feels…how do I say…grammatically incorrect?
Thanks.
The link to the baseball story is fixed. As for optimism in the football program, well, in the entire history of the program we’ve never lost a game in June. Unfortunately, typicallty there is more cause for optimism in the summer than in the fall.
