This year sucks, let's talk about next year.

With this year in IU basketball being as dismal as it is.  Let's focus on our top 10 recruiting class of next year!  How will the team look?  Who is going to start?  My best guess is something like Devan Dumes at PG and Maurice Creek at SG, Christian Watford at SF and either Bobby Capobianco or Tom Pritchard at PF and maybe Bawa Muniru at C.  But since Crean isn't a big fan of the center we can probably assume he'll stick in another guard, like Roth or either one of the new guys like Derek Elston or Jordan Hulls.  That's about all I got.  Discuss.

I haven't given that a ton of thought yet.

One of the many things this team currently lacks is a true point guard. Maybe Verdell is the answer, maybe not. Is Jordan Hulls good enough to step in as a freshman? Who knows? I follow recruiting enough to know who our recruits are, but not enough to have much opinion regarding who can help right now. By the rankings, Creek and Watford are the safest bets. Given the way this roster is built, I would expect something like Jones/Dumes/Creek/Watford/Pritchard. Depending on how ready they are, perhaps Hulls instead of Dumes or Jones, or Elston in place of one of the guards. It will be interesting, again.

I'm seeing

Rivers in the mix in there somewhere, I might even go as far as saying he’ll be the starting PG. I’m just excited to see how this all turns out next year with the level of talent that is coming in and the players that will be around for another year and will be able to make the transition into Crean’s system easier for all involved.

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Yep. At some point in the last 6 hours I remembered that I had forgotten Rivers. There’s no doubt that he would be starting on this year’s team, but given his numbers from Georgetown, I’m not sure what to expect of him. For his career, he’s shooting 35 percent from the field, 27 percent from 3, just under 50 percent from the line, and is dead even on assist/turnover ratio. Crean must have seen something that convinced him that he should use the ride on Rivers instead of another player in the freshman class. I would like to think that it was something on the court, but it may be that he’s a warm body who will help balance the classes a bit. Still, he will be one of our most experienced returning players, and he seems to be something of a team leader (this is based only on watching him interact with the team) despite not being in uniform this season.

good points all around

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

Rivers

My guess is like you said a warm body and a guy with more experience his stats definitely leave a lot to be desired. I figure that if he’s Doc Rivers’ son, the guy has to know basketball.

I think that

Rivers really hated the Half-court slow offense of Georgetown, and Crean thinks that perhaps he can improve in his system, and let’s not forget what his specialties are, limiting unforced turnovers, and playing great defense.

Depth

With guys like Verdell Jones, Nick Williams, Matt Roth, Malik Story and Tom Pritchard coming off of promising freshmen seasons and our stellar recruits coming in, next year’s team will have considerable depth. I think that was a big problem with this years team. Did anyone get nervous anytime Danny Moore was even on the court? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen him pass it off of someones foot.

Moore scared me with the ball but...

There was really no player on this year’s team that I could say I was completely confident handling the ball. Even VJ3 and Nick Williams as well as Pritchard and Story down low and Dumes where ever the hell he was on the court — I never felt a sense of sureness with any of them. That was partially a product of their nervousness at the beginning of the season and being severely overmatched at the end.

We had lots of turnover machines this year.

The problem with Moore is the lack of an upside. Jones and Williams and Pritchard gave it away quite a bit, but also brought something to the table in terms of scoring. Moore was our per-possession turnover leader but also wasn’t a threat to shoot, even when wide open. That’s a problem, but I can’t be too critical of him. Like most members of this team, Crean had no choice but to ask too much of him.

Ah, very good point. Perhaps this was the reason I could put up with their miscues while while really being frustrated by the others.

Id be surprised

if we start more than two freshman next year…atleast at the beginning. Crean will want people who know the system and have experience. I imagine it will be Verdell, Dumes, Creek, Watford, and Pritchard starting.

Waiting for the day Houston gets some sports respect.

Ahh, I agree about the freshman

but not about your Line-up, I see it more like

Rivers
Dumes
Watford
Elston/Capo
Pritchard

09-10

The most important part about this year was 3 players that will be useful in the long term and more hope for next season, which is all I was hoping for. The three players are Nick Willims has a chance to be a nice player, maybe along the line of A.J. Moye, but let’s hope not a power forward. Next, Tom Pritchard a good rebounder who can get some garbage put backs and such. Last Verdell Jones III, I started out thinking he was a useful as ice cube in Fairbanks, but came around in the end of the season. Also, Dumes will be a contributor next year, but will only be a stop gap in the long term development of the program. I am not arguing that any of these guys are going to be stars, but heading towards a winning season and back into some sort of national prominence would be great. What I am nervous about is becoming Michigan, you know, totally out of the national picture for 10 years. I don’t think it will happen, but the addition of talent into the program is just what the doctor ordered. As for Rivers he was a 3 star recruit and how could he possibly hurt what we have going? The line up will probably still be small, but we will be able to bring in some size with some combination of Capo, Pritchard, Elston, & Muniru . Hulls coming off the bench along with Williams and Creek (depending on who does start) is a massive upgrade from this season. Anyway I add it up there will be significantly more talent and size on the floor, which all makes me excited. Go Hoosiers.
